In 1968 he was a lecturer at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg. In 1969 a chair for geometry was set up there to which Krötenheerdt was appointed as a full professor. From 1969 to 1994 Krötenheerdt was a mathematics professor for geometry at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg. In 1994 he retired.
