Otto Siegfried Harnisch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Siegfried Harnisch (* around 1568 in Reckershausen near Göttingen , † August 1623 in Göttingen) was a German cantor , conductor and composer .

Life

Harnisch probably attended a Latin school in Göttingen. From 1585 he studied with interruptions until 1593 at the University of Helmstedt . Here he published a secular, German songbook as a student in 1587. He then worked from 1588 as a cantor at the cathedral monastery of St. Blasius in Braunschweig . In 1591 he was a musician in the chapel of Count Simon VI zur Lippe in Rinteln . From June 13, 1593 to the beginning of 1594 he was cantor at the particular school in Helmstedt and from 1594 to 1600 cantor at the large school in Wolfenbüttel . From around 1597 he led the chanting of the choirboys at the castle church. Here he worked under the direction of court conductor Thomas Mancinus . From there he was appointed Kapellmeister to the court of Duke Philipp Sigismund von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , whose court orchestra was located in Iburg Castle near Osnabrück. In 1603 the Göttingen city council successfully recruited him. There he was appointed cantor of St. John's Church and the sixth figure cantor of the university-like Göttingen pedagogy . In 1621 he moved to Celle as Kapellmeister. Harnisch's exact date of death is not known, the funeral took place on August 18, 1623. He probably died of the plague like the rest of his family. After Robert Eitner, he died in Celle in 1630.

Works (selection)

He published some writings on music theory, but in addition to his professional activity, he mainly appeared as a composer. In addition to some more extensive compositions, including a St. John Passion (Goslar, 1621) or the “Resurectio Dominica. The happy and comforting history of the rising. From the four evangelists, first recently written by M. Scandello , but now auffs Neu ” (Goslar, 1621). He also created many polyphonic German songs, madrigals and dance pieces. It was these smaller works that justified his great popularity, which could also be due to the fact that - as one of the first composers of his time in Germany - he based his compositions on popular Italian song forms such as canzonettes , not actually Villanelles . His motet-like compositions can be classified as follow-up works to the motets by Orlando di Lasso .
