Otto Vermehren (born August 16, 1861 in Güstrow , † October 25, 1917 in Rostock ) was a German painter , draftsman and copyist . He is known for his numerous restoration work and was the first German director of the Uffizi in Florence . He remained connected to the works of the Old Masters throughout his life , without contemporary innovations having a significant influence on him. A considerable part of the estate has been in the possession of the city of Güstrow since 1980.

Life

Vermehren was born on August 16, 1861 as a son of the high school teacher Franz (August Wilhelm) Martin Vermehren and his wife Christiane (Ulrike Joachime), née. Hennemann, born in Güstrow. His grandfather, Hermann Vermehren (1792-1858), had been superintendent in Güstrow.

In 1869 he began his high school in Güstrow. From 1879, Vermehren was an intern at the Weimar Art School , which he later became a student of. On October 21, 1880 , he enrolled at the Munich Art Academy . The first visits to Italy were made while studying.

In 1887, Vermehren married the Florentine Margherita Papini. A year later his son Augusto was born in Florence.

In 1890, Vermehren entered a school for restorers founded by Alois Hauser , which belonged to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. This was followed by alternating stays in Munich and Basel . Vermehren mainly dealt with the restoration of works by old and new masters. In 1893 the family moved to Basel. Another move to Florence followed in 1900. He became the director of the restoration workshops of the Uffizi and became the first German artist to do so. He was internationally recognized.

In 1916, Vermehren returned to his birthplace, Güstrow. He died on October 25th in Gehlsheim near Rostock and was buried four days later in Güstrow.
