Life

Stumbling block for Otto Zweig

Otto Zweig's parents were Sigmund Menachem Zweig (1845–1910), a barch manufacturer in Prossnitz, and Karoline Zweig (1853–1874), born as Karoline Doctor. She died a few days after Otto was born on January 28, 1874 at the age of 20. His father then married Karoline's sister Josefine Doctor. In 1877 Otto's younger brother, who later became a lawyer and activist in the Zionist movement Egon Zweig (1877-1949), was born. It was followed by the younger brother Felix (1879–1939) and her sister, Hildegard Rooz (* 1886), widowed at an early age. Like Egon, she emigrated to Israel. Otto Zweig attended the Commercial Academy in Linz and graduated from the institute in 1891. He studied piano in Vienna with Eusebius Mandyczewski and Anton Door . From 1894 he appeared as a pianist and composer in Olomouc. In August 1895 he was a guest at the Hotel Post in Ischl . At the inauguration of the newly built Israeli temple in Olomouc in April 1897, he led the choir. On April 1, 1898, Otto Zweig joined the Marcus Zweigs Söhne company as a public partner with the right to represent and sign the company independently. The company operated malt production and trading in malt . In July 1898 he got engaged to Anna Bries, the daughter of the Olomouc entrepreneur Ignaz Bries. They were married on December 18, 1898 in the Israeli temple in Olomouc. Their son Rudolf Zweig was born on March 22, 1900 in Olomouc. During the First World War, Otto Zweig was released from military service as company manager. Otto Zweig was involved as a councilor in the Olomouc Chamber of Commerce and Industry and on the supraregional board of the Association of Austrian Malt Manufacturers. In 1918 he was director of Schlaraffia Olomocia. After the First World War, Otto Zweig lived for many years as a malt manufacturer in Olomouc and was also involved in the Czech-Slovak commission of malt manufacturers. In 1931 he had a villa in Olomouc, now called Villa Otto Zweig, built by the Viennese architect Franz Kuhn (1874–1942). His brother Felix, who ran the Marcus Zweig Söhne company with Otto, committed suicide in Olomouc prison after his imprisonment in 1939. On May 15, 1942, the villa was confiscated by the Hitler Youth. Otto Zweig and his wife Anna were deported on July 8, 1942 and interned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp . On October 15, 1942, he was transported to Treblinka, where he was murdered a few days later. His wife Anna Zweig and their son Rudolf and his family met the same fate in October 1942.

In 2015 a stumbling block was placed in Olomouc to commemorate Otto Zweig.
