Otto shaft
The Ottoschacht was a small coal mine near the Oesede Monastery near Georgsmarienhütte in Lower Saxony .
history
The beginnings around 1553 to 1867 (opencast mining)
The mining of the Wealden coal took place at shallow depths at the outcrop of the seams . From 1722 mining was put under fiscal management and the previous coal digging was converted into regular mining with the help of various experts. With the construction of a salt works in Bad Rothenfelde and a glassworks in Bohmte , customers for the coal were available. Later the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein became interested in the coal from the nearby shaft . When stocks were exhausted - around 0.5 million tons of coal were mined - the transition to civil engineering took place .
1867 to 1889 (civil engineering)
In 1858, work began on the Georgschacht , Oesede Tiefbau- and Otto shaft . When the tunnel starting from the Oesede underground mine reached Oesede Monastery in 1866 , the facilities were taken over by the Prussian state . In March 1868 the sinking of the Otto shaft began. Since 1887 there was a mining and weather connection to the Georgschacht. The entire funding was given to the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein . At the same time, the tax authorities and the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein were interested in being able to transport the coal more cheaply and to sell it better. The hut drew a large part of its coal from here. A contract for the purchase of coal with the Osnabrück steelworks failed due to the fact that they were set up for rail transport. Attempts to sell the washed walnut and forged coals in Osnabrück also failed due to the high land freight .
A 3.1 km long rail connection to the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein was put into operation on November 1st, 1881. The Georgsmarienhütten-Eisenbahn took over the transport . With the start of railway operations on the Osnabrück-Brackwede line on August 14, 1886, the state railway took over the mine railway.
1889 (shutdown)
Fiscal mining ended in September 1889 with the closure of the Otto shaft. In December 1888 574 men were still employed, at the beginning of April 1889 only 332 people. Reasons for the closure were the deteriorating quality of the seams, high water inflows and sales problems due to increasing competition from the Ruhr area . After the cessation of coal production in the Hilterberg colliery in 1903, coal washing at the Ottoschacht station was also discontinued. After the First World War, coal mining was temporarily resumed in numerous tunnels and shafts.
Current condition
The Otto shaft fell into oblivion until 2006 the old restaurant "Blue Danube" was demolished. Remnants of the vaults of the mining facility came to light below, more precisely parts of the former coal washing plant . These are to be used to set up a learning location for mining in the Georgsmarienhütte region . So far, stone stairs leading down to the remains of the vault have been built and one of the shafts has been partially freed from the backfilling . A modeled trolley that was donated by the Heimatverein Kloster Oesede can also be viewed at the facility. Furthermore, a parking lot and the restoration of the other two shafts as well as display boards, which should tell the history of mining in the Georgsmarienhütte region, are planned. The streets Ottoschacht, Glückaufstraße, Im Kohlsiek, Schürffeld, Steigerstraße and Zum Stollen are also reminiscent of mining history.
