Ouranoupoli ( Greek Ουρανούπολη ( f. Sg. ); Pronounced Uranúpoli , Katharevousa Ouranoupolis Ουρανούπολις; dt. 'City of Heaven') is a Greek village on the Chalkidiki peninsula ( Central Macedonia region ) on the border with the Monastic Republic of Athos . Ouranoupolis has been a local community in the municipality (Dimos) Aristotelis , Stagira-Akanthos district , since 2010 .
history
Ouranoupoli was originally an ancient city around 316 BC. Chr. In the area of today Trypiti . It was founded by Alexarchus, the eccentric brother of the Macedonian king Kassander ( Strabo VII frag. 35). Alexarchos considered himself to be the sun god Helios and created a new dialect especially for the newly settled residents of the city (Athenaios 3.54.98d-e). In the 11th century, the monastery located southeast of the village was built, which was converted into a castle in the 12th century by the crusaders of the Fourth Crusade ( Frangokastro, 'Frankenburg'). In the 13th century, the area of Ouranoupoli belonged to the Athos monastery Vatopedi . In 1344 the monastery built a huge defensive tower on the pier, the tower of Prosphorion, which is still Ouranoupoli's landmark today. In 1922 the settlement was founded by refugees from Asia Minor.
economy
Ouranoupoli is mainly financed by its port and tourism . The port is the most important for supplying the Athos monasteries. Via it, on the one hand, the monks and visitors with permission (Diamonitirion) get into the monastic republic and, on the other hand, the hand-made icons, soaps, chains and candles of the monks into the place, where they are usually bought by the numerous tourists. Most of the hotels are located above the coastal road ( National Road 16 ) between Ouranoupoli and Trypiti or Ierissos on or on low hills. They offer rooms from March to September. In 2001 the place had 960 inhabitants.
climate
Since Halkidiki is located in the Mediterranean area, the subtropical zone, summer and winter are very different. Summers are hot and dry. In contrast to winter, there is rarely any rainfall during this season. In summer temperatures of around 30 ° C prevail, in winter, however, only 12 ° C.
