Ousman B. Conateh

Alh. Ousman Basi "Fisco" Conateh ORG (born November 1, 1937 in Bathurst ; † April 4, 2020 ) was a Gambian entrepreneur and sports official . He was the founder of Wallidan Football Club and President of the then Gambia Football Association (GFA).

Life

Conateh attended St. Augustine's High School in Bathurst and later completed professional training in merchandising , marketing and entrepreneurship with the United Africa Company (UAC) in Lagos , Nigeria. He was later appointed manager of Kingsway Supermarket, one of the UAC subsidiaries. He was also the administrative director of The Gambia Fisheries Ltd. and sole owner and director of the National Partnership Enterprises (NPE) Sea Food Processing Company and sole owner and chairman of the OB Trawlers Agency.

He was considered a stunning cricketer in his youth and was a national cycling champion . Conateh was the founder of Wallidan Football Club in 1969 and President of the then Gambia Football Association (GFA), although he was never an active footballer himself. In 1993 Conateh became President of the GFA (now the Gambia Football Federation , GFF), and after two terms in 2001 he voluntarily resigned from his post. He remained Honorary President of the GFA until his death. He served the West African Football Union (WAFU) as Vice President for ten years and as a member of the Confédération Africaine de Football (GAF) on the Subcommittee on Competitions for several years .

He died in 2020 after a long illness and was buried on April 5 in the Jeshwang cemetery.

Ivorian Honorary Consul

In 1986 Conateh was appointed as the Ivorian honorary consul in Gambia. He held that appointment until at least 2007. For his services he was awarded the National Order of the Republic of Cote d 'Ivoire (1995, Officer; 2007, Commander).

  • 2019: Lifetime Achievement award from the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI)
  • 2020: Life Time Achievement Award from the Gambia Football Federation
  • Achievement Award for Excellence from GCCI
  • Induction into the Hall of Fame as National Cycling Champion
  • Induction into the Hall of Fame as an international cricketer
