Out of the game -

Out of the Game is the seventh studio album of Rufus Wainwright . It was released on April 20, 2012 on Decca Records / Polydor Records . A few days later, on May 1, 2012, it was released in the USA.

History of origin

Mark Ronson produced the album from May 2011 in two studios in New York City . Several guest musicians were involved, z. B. Martha Wainwright , Thomas "Doveman" Bartlett , drummer Andy Burrows , guitarist Nels Cline , members of the Dap-Kings , Sean Lennon , the band Wilco , Miike Snows Andrew Wyatt and Yeah Yeah Yeah's guitarist Nick Zinner .

As Ronson revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone, Wainwright had given him the task of recording and arranging its music in such a way "that people no longer notice how complex it is."

In the video for the first single Out of the Game , actress Helena Bonham Carter , with whom Wainwright is friends, plays a bored librarian.

reception

The album was received mostly positively by the critics. Allmusic awarded 4 out of 5 stars, plattentests.de 8 out of 10 points. Laut.de wrote: "With" Out Of The Game "Rufus Wainwright proves himself again as a fantastic songwriter with unmistakable theatrics at a very high level. In this respect, the all-round successful work does not come up with any surprises. Nonetheless, it is perhaps his most accessible work, because despite all its versatility, it is less opulently furnished and which should please the first-time listener as much as the long-time fan. Mark Ronson has done a great job, he does not put Wainwright in a completely new light, he just has it Little dimmed! ”The German Rolling Stone magazine awarded 4 1/2 stars and ended its review with the sentence:“ The sheer brilliance leaves us exhausted: We have listened to a genius ”.
