Owen Cates Torrey junior (born October 31, 1925 in New York City , † February 13, 2001 in Norwalk ) was an American sailor .
successes
Owen Torrey, who was a member of the Noroton YC , took part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London with Lockwood Pirie in the Swallow boat class and won the bronze medal in this. With 4352 points, they came third with their yacht Margaret behind the British David Bond and Stewart Morris and the Portuguese brothers Duarte Manuel and Fernando Bello . In the star boat , Torrey also secured the bronze medal at the 1949 World Championships in Chicago . He sailed twice for the America's Cup .
Torrey joined the US Army in 1943 and was called to active service in 1944. He fought in the Ardennes and Rhineland during World War II and was released from service after being wounded in 1945. Back in the States, he graduated from Harvard in 1947 and from Columbia Law School four years later . He practiced the law of the sea in New York for nine years before setting up his own company that manufactured sails. Torrey sold the profitable business to Charles Ulmer, Inc. , but remained with the company as a vice president and designer. He was married twice and had four children.
