Pünte (ship type)
A Puente is a ship without a motor drive and a special barge . It is pulled through the water by human hands with a crank or by horses from the bank. Today Pünten are used almost exclusively as ferries .
history
Pünten were built of wood. The floor was flat, the side of the ship sloped slightly outwards. Pünten were often provided with a sail, which, however, was usually not sufficient for advancement on its own, so that there was frequent trekking . For this a horse was carried on board, which was led ashore in front of the stretches that had to be grained.
Pünten today
After centuries of decline, some Pünten are now back in operation in East Frisia , the Emsland and the Dutch province of Drenthe :
- The Leher Pünte , which is the only cable-bound ferry across the navigable Ems, operates near Lehe .
- At the Großer Meer in the East Frisian municipality of Südbrookmerland , two points have been set up along a cycle path.
- In Loquard , in the municipality of Krummhörn , a Pünte is also in operation as a connection between Loquard and Wybelsum via Knockster Tief .
- A Kurbelpünte crosses the Norder Tief totaling Neuwesteel .
- The Pünte Johannes Veldkamp , which is a restored historic Pünte from 1907, operates in the Dutch province of Drenthe .
The oldest hand-drawn ferry in Central Europe that is still in operation is the Pünte in Wiltshausen , which crosses the Jümme at the confluence with the Leda .
