P-Square

P-Square (German: P-Quadrat or P 2 ) is a Nigerian R&B and Afro-Hip-Hop duo that consists of the Lagos- born twins Peter and Paul Okoye. The twins come from Ifite Dunu in the state of Anambra and belong to the Igbo tribe.

development

The story of P-Square began at St. Murumba College , a small Catholic school in Jos , Nigeria . Twins Peter and Paul Okoye joined the school's music and theater group and began singing, dancing, and imitating songs by MC Hammer , Bobby Brown, and Michael Jackson . Later they founded under the name MMMPP a (M Clef aka Itemoh, Michael, Melvin, Peter and Paul) a cappella - Quartet . They got inspiration from their role model Michael Jackson. They learned breakdance and founded the school band Smooth Criminals in 1997 . Their artistic talent and precise dances quickly made them known in Jos, where they performed more often.

In 1999 Peter and Paul Okoye returned to music school to improve their skills on keyboards, drums, bass and rhythm guitar. Some film soundtracks such as Tobi , Mama Sunday , Moment of Bitterness and Evas River were created . In the same year they began studying business administration at the University of Abuja .

The Smooth Criminals disbanded when their members enrolled in various universities. As a result, the Okoye twins formed their own group, which appeared under the changing names Double P , P&P and Da Pees , until they finally settled on P-Square. They were managed by Bayo Odusami aka Howie T, a concert promoter.

In 2001, P-Square won the Grab Da Mic competition and Benson & Hedges sponsored their debut album Last Nite . In 2005 P-Square released their second album Get Squared on their own label Square Records . In 2007 they released their third album Game Over , which sold eight million copies worldwide. In 2009, P-Square released their fourth album Danger , on which they collaborated with 2Face Idibia , J Martins and Frenzy .

In 2010 they won the $ 1 million Kora Award .

Production and Sampling Controversy

P-Square mainly produces in-house. In doing so , they repeatedly sample Western songs and hits. The samples are not simply excerpts from songs that are inserted directly into your own songs, but rather reconstructed drum patterns, chord progressions or lyrics of the sampled songs.

Samples of other songs can be found in some of their songs:

  • Album: Get Squared
    • Temptation (contains elements from Marques Houston ft Joe Budden - Clubbin ')
    • Get Squared (contains elements from Usher ft Lil Jon & Ludacris - yeah)
    • Story (contains elements from R. Kelly - I Wish)
    • Bizzy Body (contains elements from Sean Paul - Gimme the Light)
  • Album: Game Over
    • Still that Special Man (contains elements from Craig David - Rendezvous)
