from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The PVG Presse-Vertriebs-Gesellschaft KG is one of the largest press wholesalers in Germany. The corporate group is headquartered in Frankfurt am Main . From the distribution centers in Rhine-Main (in Frankfurt), Central Hesse (in Gießen) and Rhineland-Palatinate South, around 7,000 dealers are supplied with press products every day.

In 2013, the core company generated sales of EUR 66.38 million with around 450 employees; the group as a whole achieved sales of over EUR 200 million in 2010 with 700 employees. Thomas Kirschner has been the managing majority shareholder since 1999, and the founder's four grandchildren are silent partners .

history

The company was founded in 1946 by Alfons Geubels.

When half of the company was up for sale in 1997 due to disagreement between the previous shareholders, Thomas Kirschner, who, the son of a Troisdorf press wholesaler who was friends with Geubels, had already worked for the Frankfurt company during his school days and studies, joined the company and took over the majority in 1999.

As a consequence of the decline in sales, a strategy of expansion through takeovers and diversification into other business areas followed. In 2005, for example, PVG bought the press distributor Merkur from Liederbach am Taunus (near Frankfurt). In 2006 the company acquired VCA Logistik + Services GmbH & Co. KG in Mörfelden , the nationwide market leader in returns management for train station bookstores (more than 400 affiliated shops), which has also handled the entire logistics for Lotto Hessen since 2004 . Since the takeover, the range of VCA activities has been expanded, for example in 2008 to include the beverage logistics business.

In the summer of 2007, PVG merged its Subscription division with the Hamburg company Internationaler Medien Service, which is part of the Axel Springer Verlag sales division, to form the joint venture ims Internationaler Medienservice GmbH & Co. KG , in which Springer held 55% and PVG 45%. In 2015, PVG took over the shares from Axel Springer. ims is a service provider for literature procurement for domestic and foreign major customers (companies, authorities, libraries).

In 2008, PVG incorporated the Troisdorf information logistics company Infox (including catalog service for travel agencies and tour operators) , which is active in the tourism industry . In autumn 2009 the press wholesaler Becker & Winarek from Longuich with locations in Trier , Bad Kreuznach and Mainz was added, making PVG the largest press wholesaler in Germany.

In 2011, the main Hessian logistics site in Mörfelden was expanded to include Berlin, Hamburg and Ismaning near Munich.

In May 2014, Thomas Kirschner acquired the Swiss market leader in press wholesale, the Services division of the Valora retail group , including third-party logistics, with retroactive effect to the beginning of the year . The acquired division, which is also active in Luxembourg, achieved net sales of CHF 272 million in 2013. As a result of the takeover, Valora Mediaservices AG was renamed 7Days Media Services AG , based in Muttenz in the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

As one of the first wholesalers, PVG has also been using read-it, a digital newspaper and magazine offering, since 2016.
