Pairings (alternative title: Couples ) is a German feature film from 1967 by Michael Verhoeven , who also wrote the script and produced the film - together with his wife Senta Berger . The book is based on motifs from the two-part play “Dance of Death” by the Swedish author August Strindberg . The leading roles are cast with Paul Verhoeven , Lilli Palmer , Ilona Grübel and Karl Michael Vogler . The film had its cinema premiere on November 9, 1967.

action

Edgar, the commandant of the fortress, and his wife Alice, a former actress, live on a small island in the Baltic Sea , separated from their surroundings. Disappointment and distrust separate them from their fellow human beings, who for them are "corrupt pigs", as Edgar calls it. Their only pastime is a hard, dogged fight with words in which they accuse each other of their fate and strike poisonous wounds with pointed tongues. Her audience in this foolish spectacle is Kurt, Alice's cousin, who has returned to the island after years of absence. Kurt's son Allan, for whom Edgar became the guardian after the parents' divorce , feels strongly drawn to Judith, the daughter of the married couple who indulge in hatred and malice; but he is no more a match for the precocious girl than his father is for the onslaught of feelings in Judith's parents' house. The film ends with the mental and also physical exhaustion of the opponents. There is no winner, only defeated. "Have we tormented ourselves enough?" Asks Alice, and Edgar replies: "Yes, I believe it."

Remarks

The outdoor shots were taken on the Hallig Langeneß and in the North Frisian town of Husum . The costumes come from Ilse Dubois , the buildings from Werner Achmann .

criticism

The Protestant film observer sums up his opinion as follows: “Verhoeven's plan to dissolve what, according to Beckett and Albee, now seems slightly antiquated into pictures, is not convincing despite the interesting color experiment. Older film friends, it is still recommended because of the partially significant representation "That. Encyclopedia of International film concludes:". Despite the careful design and the integration of Nordic landscapes in the company owns the staging little dramatic tension "State Film Review Board Wiesbaden gave the Work the predicate «particularly valuable».
