Patrick Richard "Paddy" McCarthy (born May 31, 1983 in Dublin ) is an Irish football player . As a central defender , he was trained at Manchester City . His sporting breakthrough came after stopping off at Leicester City and Charlton Athletic from 2008 at Crystal Palace .
Athletic career
McCarthy was trained at Manchester City . However, he was denied a breakthrough in the professional team. After first experience in the 2002/03 season at the loaner clubs Boston United and Notts County in the fourth and third division, it moved him for a transfer fee of 100,000 pounds in March 2005 in the second division to Leicester City .
As a central defender with leadership skills who knew how to organize his fellow men loudly, he soon became team captain in Leicester. This attracted the attention of Alan Pardew , who then signed McCarthy at the end of the 2006/07 season after relegation from the Premier League for Charlton Athletic . After more than 30 missions for the "Addicks" in the 2007/08 season, he then moved within London to the second division competitor Crystal Palace, trained by Neil Warnock .
The early days at “Palace” were marked by injuries. After a shoulder operation, which had become necessary after a wound he had suffered in December 2009, he had to pause a large part of the second half of the season 2009/10 and in the following season 2010/11 he was not completely exempt from worries in this regard. Ultimately, however, after his return in March 2010 he was one of the key figures who ensured the tight second division relegation in the 2009/10 season and after signing a new three-year contract in the summer of 2010 he was appointed the new team captain. He completed a total of 46 compulsory games in the 2010/11 season and scored his only goal in the 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town . The following year he was initially one of the few constants in a constantly changing four-man defense formation before he was doomed to watch in the 2012/13 promotion season . A groin injury ensured that he missed the full 2012/13 season and it wasn't until the end of January 2014 that he made his "comeback". He made his debut in the Premier League against Hull City , having just been back in the FA Cup for the first time in almost two years. In October 2014, he moved to third division Sheffield United for a month on loan .
