The Snohomish County Airport , also Paine Field ( IATA : PAE, ICAO : KPAE), is the regional airport in Snohomish County in the city of Everett in the US state of Washington . He is named after the Everett native Lt. Named Topliff O. Paine .

The Boeing Everett plant is located directly at the airport . Since March 4, 2019, it has complemented the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport , located around 50 kilometers south, as Paine Field passenger airport .

Construction of the airfield began in 1936 with runways 11/29 and runways 3/21, which were later closed, and the official opening took place in November 1938. In 1941, the US Army Air Corps took over the airfield, which after the end of the Second World War allowed civilian use again from 1946 and finally cleared the airfield in 1948. But already in 1951 the airfield was largely taken over by the military - this time for the Korean War . The airfield was renamed Paine Air Force Base . In 1966 the US Air Force withdrew completely. When the aircraft manufacturer Boeing was looking for a site that was suitable for the construction of the Boeing 747 wide-body aircraft, which was being planned, the spacious open area north of the airfield was chosen. The infrastructure had to be expanded accordingly for the new aircraft type, including the 16R / 34L runway . In order to create more capacity for general aviation , runway 16L / 34R and the hangar to the east of it were built in the 1980s .

Construction of a passenger terminal began in 2017 . The terminal was opened for use in 2019. Alaska Airlines announced that it would be the first airline to offer flights from Paine Field. Currently (as of 2020) United Airlines also uses the airport in addition to Alaska Airlines and around a dozen destinations are served. In the meantime, Southwest Airlines had also announced their intention to use the airport.
