Palazzo

A walled-in door with the family motto

The Palazzo Silva was built in the 14th century as a noble residence. Around the year 1519 he became the condottiere Paolo della Silva, who in the service of the French king Francis I was rebuilt. He is one of the best examples of a manor house in the Renaissance style at the southern edge of the Alps. The wrought iron battuto gate on Via Paletta surrounds the marble courtyard (“Corte dei marmi”), in which there is still a portal with a pointed arch . A special feature is also the spiral staircase made of serizzo stone , which leads from the basement to the roof and connects all floors of the house. The chimneys , the family coats of arms and the decorated parts of the windows and doors are made of crevoladossola marble . The motto of the Silva family is emblazoned several times on the latter : Humilitas alta petit (Eng. "Modesty strives for higher things" ). In today's Piazza Chiossi there was once the “Brolo”, a garden with a fountain and an attached orchard.

The city museum

In 1882 the Fondazione Galletti, a foundation , acquired the Palazzo Silva in order to consolidate their collections. This is how the museum came into being. As a result, it was rearranged and revised several times until it was finally housed between 1940 and 1950. In 1986 the palazzo was ceded to the municipality of Domodossola, which has owned the building ever since. Military objects ( halberds , swords , sabers , headgear and armor), furniture (tables and cupboards), ovens, keys and antique brooches, combs and fans, chasuble, wooden sculptures, marble coats of arms, Etruscan and Roman finds, copperplate engravings , Clothing from the Ossola Valley , fragments of Egyptian mummies and many paintings on display. The museum can be visited at annual opening times or in small groups on request.
