From 1898 to 1980, today's Horsehead Corporation operated a zinc smelter here with local coal and zinc from Franklin, about 100 km away . The name of the place, which is about 40 km northwest of Allentown , was given in 1912 in honor of the then President of the New Jersey Zinc Company , Stephen S. Palmer, when the city was founded.
