The Paltrock and Bockwindmühlen Langerwisch are two operational and listed grain mills in Langerwisch , a district of the municipality of Michendorf in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district in Brandenburg (Germany). The windmills are located next to each other at the foot of the 78 meter high Galgenberg, part of the Saarmunder terminal moraine arch .

The windmill is true with a wingspan of about 4.5 meters, the smallest working windmill in Germany. A master miller built it in 1938 on a 1: 4 scale as a training mill for his son. Another Langerwischer mill, a post mill from 1709, was dilapidated by the 1970s at the latest and finally collapsed in 2002.

Paltrockmühle

The Paltrockmühle was built in Oranienburg in 1839 as a post mill. In 1879 the master miller Otto Melior bought the building, had it dismantled and the individual parts transported to Langerwisch by barge and horse-drawn cart. Here the mill was rebuilt true to the original in 1879 at its current location. In 1930 the mill was converted into a more powerful Paltrockmühle. Until the end of World War II , the mill often worked around the clock to meet the flour needs of bakers in the surrounding villages. The production capacity was 1.6 to 1.8 tons of flour in 24 hours.

The Paltrockmühle in 1973

After 1945 the demand for flour declined. During the GDR era, the mill mainly produced fodder meal for the agricultural production cooperatives , and its profitability sank. Operations ceased in the early 1980s. In the 1990s, the Melior family repaired the mill and built it back to the state of 1930 in accordance with monument protection aspects. The mill has been functional again since 2000 and is put into operation especially for demonstrations such as the German Milling Day . In 2017 she was among other things the location for the fairytale film The Swineherd .

The restored mill has a blade circle diameter of 21 meters and has louvre blades (full blinds) and a new sliding ring. It can be operated with wind or motor. The wing tracking is done by a compass rose . The completely available technology consists of two aisles , a roller frame , two Askania separators , aspiration and two standing mixing machines .

Post mill (miniature mill)

The post mill, which is only three meters high, has louvre blades with a span of around 4.5 meters and a shot gallery. The miniature mill is also operational and will be presented on the German Milling Day. With its small grinding stones and its little funnel, which reminds many children of the representation in Max and Moritz , it arouses great interest, especially among adolescents. The technical monument is considered the smallest operational windmill in Germany.

The miniature mill in 2010

The mill was built in 1938 by the mill leaseholder Fräsdorf in Paretz on a scale of 1: 4 as a training mill for his son. Since the son died in the Second World War, the mill business did not pass into the next generation. At an unknown point in time (other information: 1958) the mill came to Fahrland to the master miller Karl Gutschmidt, who used it until the 1960s.

Gutschmidt, the last master miller in Fahrland, met regularly with his colleague from Langerwischer, Otto Melior. The Brandenburg state parliament member Susanne Melior suspects that it was agreed at one of the meetings that “ the childless Gutschmidt passed the small mill on to Otto Melior, who was blessed with four sons, for its actual purpose, to introduce young people to the miller's trade ”. In 1968 Otto Melior had the mill brought to Langerwisch and built next to the large mill. She fulfilled her training purpose in particular in 1972/73. After a hurricane-like storm almost completely destroyed the miniature mill on November 13, 1972, the four sons practiced rebuilding it. Since spare parts were difficult to obtain in the GDR, they made many individual parts by hand. In the years 2000/2001 the small post mill received new louvre blades, which were repaired together with the side staircase in 2009.
