action

The small kingdom of Lichterwald is on the brink of bankruptcy . The queen therefore urges her son Augustine to marry a wealthy princess in order to save the kingdom. But Augustine is more interested in enjoying his life. When his mother reminds him of his duties as prince of the kingdom of Lichterwald, he decides that he does not want to marry the princess of another kingdom, but rather the imperial daughter Victoria.

The most precious thing that the kingdom of Lichterwald has left is a nightingale that can sing any song and a rose , the scent of which makes all worries fly away. Prince Augustin takes the nightingale and the rose to the imperial court in order to win the heart of the emperor's daughter. But the daughter only loves trinkets made by human hands, so that she does not even receive Augustine.

However, the prince doesn't let himself get rid of that quickly and hires himself out as a swineherd at the imperial court in order to be close to his beloved. At the grocery store Schief & Krumm he exchanges his nightingale and his rose for a pot that can conjure up soap bubbles and songs at the same time, and a wondrous ratchet to win the imperial daughter's heart. The Emperor's daughter is enthusiastic about these bells and whistles and desperately wants the two things, but the swineherd Augustin first demands 10, then 100 kisses for the two things. The Emperor's daughter is outraged by what this swineherd is asking of her, but in the end she agrees despite this impertinence. The two slowly get closer and Victoria keeps her promise of 100 kisses within two days.

The emperor visits his daughter in the park to inform her that he wants to announce her engagement to the extremely wealthy Prince Ferdinand von Wasserfelde at the court ball tomorrow . Victoria is desperate. She realizes that she genuinely loves Prince Augustin and confesses her love to him in a touching letter. Augustin is also now clear that Victoria is the right woman for him.

He asked the two shopkeepers Schief & Krumm to dress in princely fashion. He wants to prove at the ball that he is the right candidate for Victoria. Under a false name he goes to the ball with the shopkeepers who pretend to be his followers. The arrogant Prince Ferdinand can hardly wait to get to know his bride. Victoria invites him to dance. During a contredanse , Victoria and Augustin manage to talk to one another without being observed for a brief moment. Augustine explains that he wants to save Victoria from her greatest misfortune. The two flee the ballroom and admit their love in Victoria's private chambers. The emperor surprises the lovers there, demands an explanation from Victoria and threatens her with disinheritance . At that moment, she loses her courage and she denies having kissed the swineherd.

The emperor continues to push for marriage to Prince Ferdinand. Augustin's mother has also opened a new "batch" for her son, Kunigunde, the daughter of her main believer. Victoria wants to become a pig shepherd to prove to Augustin that she loves him. She learns from the real swineherd that Augustine is a prince and has returned to his kingdom. She asks the two shopkeepers, Schief & Krumm, to leave her Rose and Nightingale to bring them back to the prince. She reached the kingdom right on Prince Augustine's wedding day .

During the wedding ceremony , she releases the nightingale, who sits down on the windowsill and sings a song. Augustine knows that Victoria has returned to him. When Victoria wants to leave the kingdom, Prince Augustin catches up with her. The two confess their love again and Augustin asks Victoria to become his wife, even without wealth or financial means. The emperor, who has ridden after his daughter, finally gives the lovers his blessing too.
