action

Princess Isabella von Geranien bathes happily in the "Forbidden Lake", which lies on the border to the hostile neighboring country, while her maids are desperately looking for her. One of the girls got the idea that the princess might be at the "Forbidden Lake". You go there. The princess, who is actually there, meets an unexpected visitor during her stay in the water. A young man approaches her, but after a short teasing dialogue disappears just as quickly as he appeared underwater, while Isabella briefly turns her back on him. When the princess has dressed and is still lingering on the bank, the young man suddenly appears again and is referred to by her as a "donkey" and the "king of the flies, lord of the mosquitoes". He gives her a water lily. The princess's maids have now reached the lake and are leading her back to the castle. There the clothes maker is already waiting for the young woman to dress her for a bridal show, which her father, King August, arranged against her will.

The man who surprised Princess Isabella at the lake is Prince Richard. He tells his sister Maximiliane about his encounter with the princess from the Kingdom of Geraniums. The sister points out that their fathers are enemies with one another. Prince Richard, however, raves about how “beautiful and loving” the princess is and wants to see the bride. His sister says that she will accompany him to protect him.

In the kingdom of geraniums, the princess locks herself in her room after visiting the dressmaker and leaves her father and the maids waiting in front of the door. She refuses to receive the nobles who are free around her. When her father lets the door open, the princess is hanging from a braided bed sheet tied to the window mast. The guards must come to her aid.

When the princess's suitors introduce themselves to the king, one of the maids accidentally steps on her dress and it rips. The princess expels the maid from the castle. Now she has to go back to her room to change clothes. Nobody from the invited party heard of the incident, but the princess is a long time coming, which angered the king. When Isabella finally comes back to the royal hall, none of the noblemen present is good enough for the headstrong young woman, she mocks each of them. The stranger from the “Forbidden Lake” also came, whom the princess immediately gave the name “King Thrushbeard” because of his beard. But since it turns out that he is the Prince of Begonias, with whose kingdom they are enemies, she rejects him too. The king is angry about the behavior of his daughter and determines that the princess has to take the first beggar who appears in front of the castle as her husband. Thereupon a short time later the stranger appears disguised as a "minstrel" beggar in front of the gate of the castle. The king has given his word and does not intend to break it. The rebellious princess has no choice but to marry the minstrel. When she learns that the great forest, the green meadow and the beautiful city belong to "King" Drosselbart, she regrets not having taken him as a man.

The pampered princess has to get used to life in a simple hut without servants, and she has to earn a living with work. When her husband leaves the hut on weekdays, she goes to the market and then to an inn where she wants to be pampered. Since she has no money, the landlords and the tailor who is in the house, from whom she has ordered a new dress made of the finest Chinese silk and new shoes made of Italian calfskin, are more than annoyed. The princess doesn't know what to do next and flees. Prince Richard, who was following the action, throws a bag of gold to those who feel betrayed.

For inexplicable reasons, the princess always runs in circles on her retreat and finally falls unconscious into a pit. She is later found by her husband and taken care of at home. The next morning the minstrel leaves again and the princess asks him to bring sweet donuts as they would make her healthy. After talking to his sister about it, she points out that it is a trick and advises him to bring bitter medicine with him. In the evening he brings medicine with him that, according to Isabella, would work from a distance. Well again, the princess has to do her part with the housework.

After unsuccessful attempts at basket weaving and other things, the minstrel tries to trade pots and jugs on the market. In the meantime Richard intends to enlighten the princess and thus free her from the poor situation, but when he sees how she deals with an older trader, he rejects this again. The princess can achieve first successes in the market. When she sat down at the corner of the market the next day, against the advice of her fellow men and against her husband's objection, in order to stand out from the other market people, a racing rider (who later turned out to be the "King" Thrushbeard) destroyed her Were. Out of shame, the princess becomes a kitchen maid with King Ottokar, not realizing that she is in the castle of her "king" Thrushbeard. He organizes a festival at the castle and introduces the kitchen maid of his castle to the party community as Princess Isabella of Geraniums and, to the surprise of those present, as his wife, with whom he married some time ago against the will of his father and the King of Geraniums was received. The astonished princess sees the prince after his deception and is happy to confirm her yes by celebrating a lavish wedding party.

criticism

The lexicon of international films read:

“Solidly staged (TV) fairy tale film based on the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The film takes on its tangible lesson in humility , but combines it with a surprisingly diverse fable about love, false expectations of it and instructive insights into outdated gender roles . "

The television magazine Gong gave four out of six possible points, which corresponded to the judgment "good" and judged:

“Lovely entertainment. Adorable. "
