action

The fisherman Hein lives happily with his wife Ilsebill in an old, run-down pot by the sea. One day he catches a big flounder . The flounder can speak to the fisherman's surprise and asks him to let him live; he was an enchanted prince . When he returns, the fisherman tells his wife about his experience. The woman reproaches him for not wishing anything from the flounder. She wants a hut with a garden, fruit, geese and animals and a home for her children. She sends him back to the sea. The fisherman calls the flounder. He appears and Hein wants a hut on behalf of his wife. The Flounder replies: “She already has it.” When he comes back to his wife, the hut is there.

Hein continues to be successful in fishing, although the sea is already showing green and yellow colors and the fish no longer bite with other fishermen. Hein gives his catch to the fisherman Klaas, who has not caught anything. Ilsebill, however, is dissatisfied. She wants a big, stone castle . The hut is no longer good enough for her. Hein calls the Flounder again and asks for the lock for Ilsebill. Again the Flounder replies: “She already has it.” When Hein comes back, Ilsebill has already hired servants and plays the mistress. However, Hein just wants to be happy and satisfied. Ilsebill, however, always wants more. The servant Johann points out that she is no longer allowed to behave like a fisherman's wife, but like a lady of the castle. The invited neighbors, Count and Countess Lausenburg, let Ilsebill and Hein clearly feel the class differences and make fun of Hein. Ilsebill has to realize that she will not be accepted in her new state.

Ilsebill now wants to become queen . Hein doesn’t want to tell the Flounder, but finally goes to the sea, which by now already smells like hell, and asks for it. Again the Flounder replies: “She already has it.” When Hein returns, he meets “King Ilsebill”. She orders that from now on neither flounder nor flatfish may be caught.

Hein tormented by premonitions. When he visits Klaas and wants to bring him fish again, he has to find out that his daughter is sick; Klaas doesn't want to accept any more fish from Hein either. King Ilsebill is still dissatisfied, however, because the emperor is still above her. Hein begs Ilsebill to stop wishing. The sea stinks, children get sick. But she now wants to become emperor. “I'm the king, you're just my husband!” Says Ilsebill and orders Hein to go to the Flounder again. Hein feels that he has lost Ilsebill. However, he goes to the Flounder and asks that Ilsebill be made emperor. The Flounder replies: "It is already."
