About someone who set out to learn to fear is a German fairy tale film by Tobias Wiemann from 2014. It is based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm and was published by Radio Bremen as well as by NDR and MDR for the ARD series Six in one fell swoop produced.

action

Michel, the son of a potter, cannot be afraid and therefore cannot understand what fear means. His father worries because he believes that knowing what fear is is an important part of life. Michel's brother Caspar, on the other hand, is annoyed that his brother just can't be afraid. So Michel decides to learn to fear, and his father agrees with the pastor that he should teach him to fear. While the pastor sends Michel up to the church tower and instructs him to ring the bell every hour, he disguises himself as the Godfather of Death and wants to scare Michel. But fearlessly the boy steps towards the figure, which then falls into the depths and breaks its bones. Resigned at not having learned how to shudder again, he moves into the world and leaves father and brother. He goes into the moor, hoping to be afraid there. He meets will- o'-the-wisps and two bog corpses , but nothing of the kind scares him. In the evening he stops at an inn and learns about a castle that is said to be cursed. Since then, the king and his daughter, Princess Elisabeth, have lived with their entire court far away from their home castle in a camp and hope that someone will be found who will free the castle from the ghost and who will receive the princess’s hand as a thank you. This piques Michel's interest and he asks the king to try his luck. Elisabeth is not at all enthusiastic about this because she likes the young man and doesn't want anything to happen to him. But Michel doesn't let that stop him and goes into the haunted castle. He encounters wondrous figures, but none of them can frighten him. He spends the night in one of the many rooms where “ Tiamat ” appears to him, the ruler of spirits and demons. She gives him a riddle and wants to take him into the spirit world if he can't solve it. So she speaks:

The one who does it doesn't want it.
Whoever wears it does not keep it.
Whoever buys it doesn't need it.
He who has it doesn't know.

After thinking for a moment, Michel said it could only be a coffin. Angry that Michel has solved the riddle so quickly, Tiamat disappears and conjures him up in a mirror world from which he can hardly find an exit. Intuitively he blows on his pottery pipe and suddenly all the mirrors burst. Michel is free and the castle freed from the ghost.

Princess Elisabeth is happy that nothing happened to her future husband, because she was very worried about him. After they both want to go to bed in the evening and Michel has already made himself comfortable, Elisabeth pours a slippery liquid over him and he jumps out of bed, startled. So in the end his wife was able to teach him how to shudder. Thoughtfully, he realizes that the feeling has actually always been known to him. He just didn't know and only learned to perceive it through Elisabeth.

background

The shooting took place from June 24, 2014 to July 11, 2014. Filming locations were u. a. in Saxony-Anhalt at Neuenburg Castle near Freyburg (Unstrut) and in the Pforta State School , in and near Bremen (Schnoor and Knoops Park and Teufelsmoor ) and in Fischerhude .

Deviations from the literature

The film adaptation sticks closely to the Grimm version at the beginning. The story of spending the night under the gallows is replaced by a night in the moor. Furthermore, Michel has to spend three nights in the castle in the literature (where he has no name) to end the spook and takes three things with him that the king has provided for him. In the end, his wife throws fish into his bed, which has been replaced by a slimy liquid in the film.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach of tittelbach.tv says about this film: “'From someone who set out to learn to be afraid' is in the tradition of the dark Brothers Grimm fairy tales. The motif of fear is played out in different variants; the subtext therefore has great psychological and philosophical depth. Fear as a survival strategy, but also as a source for the feeling of love, that is the basic idea of the ARD film. The complexity of the material continues in the appropriate modernization: in particular the gender and generational images that the film draws circumvent the old-fashioned clichés and have a contemporary tone. Tobias Wiemann's film is particularly up-to-date in terms of its staging. "

Awards

At the beginning of June 2015, Isolda Dychauk won the award for “Best Actor” for her role as Princess Elisabeth at the 23rd German Children's Media Festival Goldener Spatz .

In October 2015 the film won the award for “best Kinolino children's film premiere” at the 23rd Children's Film Festival in Dresden. The children's jury awarded him the rating “particularly recommendable”.

The film was also nominated at the Schlingel International Film Festival in the "Focus on Germany" category.
