action

Prince Gundolf, tired of ruling, is looking for a successor among his sons. He promises his court master Julius that he will only hand over his scepter to those of his sons who bring home the finest carpet. His older sons Gerhard and Gebhard are firmly convinced that they can solve this task to their father's satisfaction and bring him the finest carpet home. They don't think much of the abilities of their younger brother Gustav, they shower him with ridicule and scold him “stupid”. So that the brothers don't look in the same direction, Prince Gundolf throws three feathers from his beloved stuffed falcon into the air.

While Gerhard and Gebhard follow the springs to the east and west, Gustav follows the spring into the forest to a small cave. There he meets the talking toad, Itsche, which he rescued ten years earlier from the cooking pot of the prince cook. Gustav expresses his wish for the most beautiful carpet in front of Itsche, she casts a spell, and a box with the finest carpet opens. Gustav brings this to his father's house. Meanwhile, Gerhard and Gebhard met at a memorial on the other side of the forest and went to the inn in the nearby village to enjoy themselves with beer. They are firmly convinced that their brother Gustav will not find a nice carpet in the forest and make a pact that if Gerhard becomes prince, Gebhard can continue to live with him like a prince. On the way to the inn, Gerhard stole an old red curtain from a poor subject, which he passed off as a carpet and brought to his father as a present. When the father receives both in quick succession, he decides on Gustav's carpet. But Julius advises him not to make the decision dependent on that alone.

The next day, the day before Prince Gundolf's 60th birthday, the Prince gives his sons a new task. This time they should bring him the most beautiful ring. The paths show them again three springs, two of which lead Gerhard and Gebhard back together to the memorial and Gustav into the forest to the Toad Itsche. Believing that Gustav would not find a ring in the forest, Gerhard and Gebhard go back to the inn. While Gebhard is dining like a king, Gerhard gets a ring by stealing it from an old man's pipe. Meanwhile, Gustav follows his pen back into the forest. There he meets a young, blond , barefoot girl by the river, who is wearing a light green dress and a dark green cape with a hood . A black and white piebald rabbit sits on her lap. Gustav joins her and the two start a conversation about the rabbit. It turns out that Gustav raised this rabbit back then and that his father wanted to have it cooked on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The blonde girl had prevented this by stealing the rabbit from the cook just before it was slaughtered. When a guard for the prince comes by, Gustav does not reveal the blonde girl to him, but she does not want to reveal her name to Gustav or show her face. Both hand over the rabbit to the freedom of the forest, and Gustav moves on to the Toad Itsche. He thanks her for the carpet and now expresses the wish for the ring. Itsche then opens her mouth and a thick gold ring adorned with diamonds and brilliant-cut diamonds, which shines like a ray of sunshine, appears on her tongue. Gustav takes it with him and brings it to his father, who is angry about the ring that Gerhard gave him because he was able to bend it with his fingers. By contrast, he is so enthusiastic about Gustav's ring that his heart almost stops with happiness. But Gustav's brothers and Julius convince him again that he should not appoint Gustav.

Soon afterwards Julius sets one last task at the side of the resting prince. This time the most beautiful bride in the village is to be found. Whoever brings them should become a prince. Julius throws three feathers in the wind, and the two feathers to the east and west lead Gerhard and Gebhard back to the monument, and the third feather leads Gustav back into the forest. While Gerhard is choosing two fat farmer's daughters for himself and his brother, Gustav goes to the toad and explains his father's third wish. However, he himself has already half accomplished this task, since he has in mind the young, blonde, barefoot girl in a green dress and cloak, whom he previously met at the river. With a spell, the toad Itsche leads him to her and the two ride on a brown steed to the princely father Gundolf. After the rather fat brides of his older sons were unable to convince him, the young, blonde, barefoot girl in a green dress at Gustav's side convinces him because she is slim and pretty to look at. She lost her cloak in the prince's palace on the way to the prince's room. When Gustav is asked whether his bride really comes from his father's principality, she whispers in his ear that her name is Barbara and that she lives in the forest between the village and the castle, which Gustav then announced. His father, Prince Gundolf, then lets the festival dance begin, and all the princely sons are to dance with their brides. Because Barbara is barefoot, Gustav takes off his shoes before the dance and dances on stockings so as not to injure Barbara's bare feet. Prince Gundolf has his advisor Julius and his sons Gerhard and Gebhard referred to the stable and asks his son Gustav and his bride Barbara to come to him. Prince Gundolf gets up from his throne and lets his son Gustav take a seat there while he holds Barbara by his right hand. In the final scene you see Gustav and Barbara dancing hand in hand in front of the Prince's Palace for a long time.
