The Little Mermaid is a German fairy tale film from 2013. It is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen and was created as part of the Six in One Stroke series . The film was first broadcast on Das Erste in the 2013 Christmas program.

The mermaid Undine lives with her sisters Aquarella and Melusine and her father, the sea king, on the ocean floor. But Undine wants more than just combing her golden hair, because she is fascinated by life above water. One day she saves Prince Nikolas life and falls head over heels in love with him. However, the prince is passed out and is soon found by a princess. Both immediately fall in love, but the princess disappears when she sees people approach. Undine observes this and looks for the mighty sea witch Mydra in the dark grotto and wants her to exchange her fish tail for legs. But Mydra has one condition: once on land she will be mute and if the prince does not choose her, she will foam on the waves of the sea. In addition, every step will be painful for them. Undine agrees.

The next morning she is discovered by the prince on a rock. He invites her to his castle, which is in the middle of the wedding preparations for Prince Nikolas and the unknown Princess Anneline. Undine only had a few days to conquer the heart of the prince, who, however, learned to appreciate and love her like a sister. They fight and ride together, but he keeps thinking of the unknown beauty.

On the day of the wedding, Nikolas and Undine dance together, but when Princess Anneline appears and he is overjoyed to recognize the beautiful stranger in her, they get married. Undine is sitting sadly by the sea at night when her sisters appear. They give her a dagger that Mydra gave them for her hair. If Undine kills Nikolas with it, she becomes a mermaid again. Undine enters the newlyweds' bedroom, but she can't bring herself to kill Nikolas. Determined, she throws the dagger into the sea. Mydra appears and explains to Undine that she passed the exam. Undine receives a soul and can now explore the world.

Film set (Grotto of the Mermaids) in Saalfeld

The shooting took place from June 4th to June 25th 2013. The film was shot in Saxony-Anhalt ( Wörlitz Castle ) and Thuringia , including in the fairy grottoes near Saalfeld .

Meret Becker introduces the fairy tale film as the narrator. The Little Mermaid was released on DVD on November 14, 2013, before its television premiere on Boxing Day 2013.
