action

“The plot is true to the original based on the Grimm fairy tale The Master Thief . But there are some additional scenes. "

An old man sat with his wife in front of his poor house. They just had the bare essentials for life.

A magnificently dressed gentleman - Robert, the master thief - rides up. When asked what they can do for him, he asks for a simple potato dish and then reveals himself to be their son, who ran away long ago. He gained his wealth by stealing. He returned because of his pregnant wife. Now he wants to face the count, he hopes for leniency because he is the count's godson.

The count welcomes the rich man with joy, but is very angry when the man reveals his wealth as stolen property and himself as a master thief and as Robert, the count's godchild.

The count (exasperated by his daughter) gives Robert three tasks:

  1. He should steal his (guarded) horse from the stable.
  2. He is supposed to steal his bed sheet and his wife's wedding ring.
  3. He is supposed to steal the pastor and the sexton from the church.

If he masters these almost insoluble tasks, the count wants to give him freedom, respect and recognition.

With cunning and trickery - the Count has to laugh in amazement - Robert masters the three tasks.

  1. He switches off the guards with an anesthetic and can steal the horse.
  2. By deceiving the count - the count is shooting at a scarecrow - and his wife - Robert pretends to be the count - he succeeds in the second task.
  3. By a trick, the pastor and sexton get into a sack. They think they are in heaven and they are brought to the courtyard.

The Count gives Robert his freedom and pays him his respect.

Changes

Original:

  1. In the original by the Brothers Grimm there is no pregnant wife.
  2. In the original there is no count's daughter.
  3. In the original, the count shoots a dead man.

An interpretation was also added to the original: Robert's upbringing failed, Robert and his father got into an argument and the former ran away from home. He searched and found his own way beyond social conventions but not without a code of honor. Now that the master thief is becoming a father himself, it was time to return home to resolve the dispute.
The three thefts become a master craftsman's examination, which is taken by his godfather, the count. The master thief manages to be accepted by his father for who he is. He's made it, and his parents can be proud of him. It is now time to become a father yourself.
