action

A man and his daughter are in need because they have no farmland. To draw the king's attention to this, they plant a garden on the roof of their hut on the daughter's idea. When the king notices this, he has the man brought to him to find out the reason. Not unimpressed by the daughter's idea, the king fulfills his wish and gives him land.

In the meantime, the king's mother has asked Princess Eulalia as a possible bride for her son to the castle, since he has to marry according to the house law of the family in order not to lose the throne to his (incompetent) cousin and his (scheming) wife. Eulalia, however, is spurned by the king, like eleven other princesses before, because she is too stupid for him.

While plowing his field, the farmer finds a gold mortar and hands it over to the king despite his daughter's warning. This comes true when the king regards the lack of the pestle as a theft and has the farmer thrown into dungeon. When he learns that the farmer's daughter had warned her father not to hand over the mortar, he had her called over to personally convince herself of her alleged cleverness. He poses a riddle for her and promises to release her father if the solution is found and to marry her. To everyone's amazement, she solves the riddle, her father is released, and the king asks his mother to prepare for the wedding. Although the farmer's daughter cannot cope with the rigid life at court, she and the king are slowly getting closer. Since Müller, who was originally a bourgeois councilor, quickly developed a good relationship with her, even the initially less enthusiastic royal mother gradually learned to accept her future daughter-in-law.

Meanwhile, the cousin and his wife, the cousin, want to get the farmer's daughter out of the way. But this plan fails. When the cousin catches the maid stealing food shortly afterwards, the king wants to spare her if she can solve a riddle. With the secret help of the farmer's daughter, the maid gives the correct answer, but the king notices this and feels betrayed by his bride. Shortly afterwards, he unjustly resolves a dispute between a carter, who is friends with the father of the farmer's daughter, and an ox farmer in favor of the latter. The carter asks the farmer's daughter for help, who advises him to use a ruse to make the king understand the ridiculousness of his judgment. But the king finds out that his future wife is behind it and sends her back to her hut after this new insult. However, it allows her to take the best and most loved from the castle as a souvenir.

In the meantime, the cousin and the cousin devise a plan to murder the king with poison. The farmer's daughter, however, prepares a sleeping potion for which she unknowingly pours out the poisoned wine and thus saves the king's life. He drinks the sleeping potion and immediately falls into a deep sleep. With the help of the carter, the farmer's daughter takes him to her hut, where he wakes up a little later, completely amazed. Since the king realizes that he is her dearest and best friend, the two of them reconciliation and after the cousin and cousin have been expelled from the castle by the queen's mother, a happy wedding is celebrated.
