The three royal children is a German fairy tale film from 2019. It is a fairy tale based on motifs by Johann Wilhelm Wolf and Wilhelm Busch . It was produced for the ARD series Six in one fell swoop by kurhaus production Film & Medien GmbH on behalf of ARD under the leadership of SWR for Das Erste . The TV premiere took place on December 25, 2019 on Das Erste.

action

The fairy tale takes place over a period of almost 20 years and contains many different storylines and characters, whereby their different social positions and background stories take an important aspect.

The story is about the royal children Lotte, Fritz and Theo, who, however, grow up with the friendly gardening couple, Emmi and Hans, instead of in the royal family seat. The siblings know neither about their origin nor their descent. Because even as small children they were snatched from the royal couple Marie and Alexander every two years, put in wicker baskets and left to the flow of the stream. But fate was kind to them: the current drove them to the bank of the adjacent garden of a gardening family. They took in the foundlings as loving foster parents and gave them a happy childhood characterized by closeness to nature.

Lotte, the youngest of the foster children, does not leave the question of where they come from. What she does not suspect is that it was not the hardship of her birth parents that drove her to take this drastic step, but rather a perfidious plan of her wicked grandmother, Queen Mother Eliza. Since her daughter-in-law was a peasant girl, she had the three royal children robbed from their childbirth and replaced with puppies and commissioned the servant Corbinian to kill the babies. However, Corbinian could not do this and put her in the basket in the brook.

That this plan did not work out and that the three children are still alive made it necessary for the Queen Mother Eliza to intervene again. Disguised as a herbalist, she tells the girl that only the bird of truth can answer her question. To do this, however, she has to take on the magic mountain.

First the two older brothers try to conquer the magic mountain, but they fail and are petrified. Now it's up to Lotte to bravely stand up for her siblings and save them. It is only thanks to her sincerity, honesty and special attachment to the animals that she passes the subsequent tests, redeems her enchanted brothers and unravels the riddle of their origins. Her petrified mother will also be redeemed.

The film ends in dungeon for the Queen Mother, with a happy ending for the others .

production

The action underlying motifs from fairy tales , the three royal children of Johann Wilhelm Wolf and three royal children of Wilhelm Busch . Grimm's fairy tale De Drei Vügelkens is similar . The script for the fairy tale Die Drei Königskinder was written by Silja Clemens and Barbara Miersch . Directed by Frank Stoye . The budget was just over a million euros.

The shooting took place in May 2019 in Baden-Württemberg . The main locations were Sigmaringen Castle and the Wolfegg Farmhouse Museum . The Hohenzollern Castle in the Sigmaringen district plays the royal family seat in the film. Most of the scenes were filmed inside the castle for this purpose. The scenes in and around the gardener's house were recorded in the farmhouse museum in Wolfegg in the Ravensburg district . The filming location was the courtyard around the historic "Haus Füssinger", a Rhine Valley house in log construction, which was also used for interior shots, as well as the "Schopf Flunau". Since the script for the fairy tale film envisages a summer cottage garden, this was specially created in the farmhouse museum and decorated with plastic sunflowers. Another location was a clearing in Schmeien (Sigmaringen district) and the Vogelherd cave in the Archäopark near Stetten ob Lontal in the Heidenheim district . The Vogelherd Cave, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017 , is one of the six caves of the World Heritage Site Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Alb . In the film it forms the mysterious entrance gate to the magic mountain. The rock formation is part of the Swabian Alb in the background you can see the typical juniper heaths.

In addition to the shooting with the young actors in the leading roles, the 13 different animals of the film animal ranch under head trainer Renate Hiltl on the set, as well as the shooting in the snow, although the fairy tale actually takes place in summer, were challenging .

The music was recorded with soloists from the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra in a string quintet.

criticism

“Film adaptations of popular fairy tales traditionally work well at Christmas, and this was no different at this year's festival. Das Erste, which showed several fairy tales during the day, was particularly able to benefit from this. “The three royal children” turned out to be particularly popular, and from just before 2 p.m. they were able to get 2.42 million viewers to tune in. The quota for the fairy tale film produced this year climbed to a really strong 17 percent. For 14 to 49 year olds, it was also outstanding with 11.8 percent. "

"What makes this film outstanding among the“ 6 in one sweep ”and the“ fairy tale pearls ”of recent years is the actress Adele Neuhauser, known as the Viennese crime scene inspector, who is the Queen Mother here. Perhaps it was a single sentence from the original, who gave the inspiration for the creation of this figure: "The wicked old woman triumphed and jumped for joy that her old bones shook," says Wolf's storybook, and just as expressively, without reason angry and with great joy, the queen walks through it Movie."
