action

The poor miller Hinze suffers from the high tax demands of the evil magician Abbadon. Shortly before his death, he distributed the inheritance to his three sons: son Hermann got the mill, son Hubert the donkey and son Hans the tomcat Minkus. At first the disappointed Hans wants to have gloves made of the cat's fur, but then Minkus promises to bring Hans luck; he just asks Hans for a pair of shoes. After receiving the shoes, Minkus turns into a nobleman.

A little later Abbadon storms the village with his three black knights to turn the miller into a dog because of his disobedience. But since the miller has died, Abbadon transforms Hubert; his two brothers should have their turn later.

In the meantime, Minkus introduces himself to King Otto, whose castle is sunk in lethargy, as the envoy of Count Karrabas and brings the king a sack of partridges. The king is happy about Count Karrabas as a potential candidate for marriage for his daughter Frieda and gives Minkus a bag of ducats. A little later, Hans was able to use this money to pay Abbadon the required taxes.

Minkus tells the princess that his master is Count Karrabas and arranges a meeting between Frieda and Hans at the lake. He instructs the villagers to hand over the entire land as the property of Count Karrabas. In the meantime, Minkus sneaks into Abbadon Castle. He flatters the vain witch lords to transform themselves into different animals. When this turns into a mouse, he is eaten by Minkus.

The castle of Abbadon, which had been dark until then, shines as bright as day; and Hubert and all the other villagers enchanted by Abbadon get their original shape back. Hans and Frieda marry and move into Abbadon's castle, Minkus himself is rewarded by the king with a ministerial post at Hans' request.

"Fairly tale film with great detail about generosity and gratitude, told in a tricky and child-friendly manner."
