action

“A poor couple has an only daughter of rare beauty; moreover, she is kind, hardworking, and pious. Because she is as beautiful as seven young girls together, she is called Siebenschön. "

The farmer's maid Siebenschön is not only smart, but also very pretty. But she doesn't like it that everyone only pays attention to the appearance. Her parents would like to see her choose a husband, but she cannot find anyone in the village who meets her requirements. When the pushy baron presses her from and to Wildungen, she decides to cover her face. She does not want to be reduced to her beauty, but to devote herself even more to the study of the healing arts. She is supported by the nun Genoveva in the nearby monastery, who lets her share her knowledge of medicinal plants and is also her friend and mentor. One day in the library of the monastery she meets Prince Arthur, who is just as interested in science as she is. The prince falls in love with the peasant girl, which his father displeases. For King Richard, only a bride who is appropriate to her status comes into consideration. Siebenschön's parents also consider it improper that their daughter fell in love with the prince. Prince Arthur, who succeeds in seeing Siebenschön without a veil, wants only her and no other to be his wife.

Baron von und zu Wildungen has not given up his efforts to look after the beautiful girl. Disappointed about the rejection, he burns Siebenschön's family home. The parents have disappeared and she takes refuge in Genoveva's monastery. She blames herself and her name for what happened. She has her long hair cut and henceforth calls herself "Misfortune". Disguised as a boy, she goes to King Richard's court in the hope of finding her parents there. In the search for work, “misfortune” is presented to the king, whom his doctors are currently treating with all sorts of obscure means for his back pain.

Prince Arthur is also deadly unhappy because his beloved has disappeared without a trace and, according to his father's wishes, he should not see her again. To add to the emphasis, he is holding Siebenschön's parents prisoner. To make matters worse, he is genuinely willing to marry his son to the crazy Princess Zilly. “Misfortune” tries to prevent this by “he” treats King Richard against his pain with funds from the monastery garden and thus can interest him in his son's inventions. But the intrigues of the Baron von und zu Wildungen threaten to blow up "misfortune" camouflage and Prince Arthur also has to bow to his father's will in the end.

On the arduous journey in the carriage to the neighboring kingdom to Princess Zilly, Siebenschön is recognized and is to be taken to prison. Baron von und zu Wildungen senses his chance and offers the king to marry Siebenschön out of generosity, as he is convinced that there is a good core in her. A double wedding is being prepared in the kingdom of King John. Since Princess Zilly would much rather marry the baron, the clever nun Genoveva puts her on a ruse. The brides swap roles and allow themselves to be led to the altar with veiled faces. In the end, everyone marries the man they wanted from the start.

background

The filming of the fairy tale Siebenschön took place in the Rhön between Ostheim , Urspringen , Sondheim and Fladungen . Other locations were Fasanerie Castle in Fulda, Ronneburg and Seligenstadt Monastery. Most of the village scenes were played in the Franconian open air museum . There, the burned down parental home with charred beams, destroyed walls and smashed roof tiles was recreated. Even a tree in front of the house was attached and placed on an iron plate especially for the filming.
