Die Galoschen des Glücks is a German fairy tale film by Friederike Jehn from 2018. The plot is based on motifs from the art fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen and was produced by rbb for the ARD series Six in One Stroke . Jonas Lauenstein and Luise von Finckh as well as Josefine Voss , Annette Frier , Inka Friedrich and Corinna Kirchhoff play the leading roles .

Johann is a simple kitchen boy and dreams of belonging to the high society, so to "those up there". In the kitchen, Frau Sorge and Frau Glück swing the scepter or the wooden spoon. Nobody knows that they are actually fairies. Grand Duchess Ottilie's grandniece, whose birthday is to take place there, is expected in the castle. Her maid Lisbeth arrives the day before, and she has the desire to become an actress. When Princess Aurora arrives, Johann falls head over heels in love with the beautiful young woman.
Frau Sorge and Frau Glück have long been in possession of the “galoshes of happiness”, who can fulfill heart's desires. It is due to a coincidence that Johann gets into the dusty galoshes and expresses the wish to be a prince too. The unbelievable happens, he finds himself on a horse, dressed like a prince and introduces himself to the princess and her brother Amadeus and his friend, Prince Laszlo, as Prince Ludwig. At first everything goes quite well, although Johann has no idea of the customs that prevail in aristocratic circles and repeatedly causes head shakes because of his manners. It is Lisbeth who introduces him to some customs at court and also initiates him to the art of dancing. With his birthday present, a tin that floats blue butterflies, Johann can score points with the princess in his role as Prince Ludwig, she tells him that she has never got anything so charming. Prince Amadeus and Prince Laszlo, who is also courting the princess, suspect that something is wrong with this strange prince.
Johann didn't notice that Lisbeth secretly fell in love with him the first time he saw him. However, the fairies worry and happiness did not go unnoticed by Lisbeth's feelings. Both of them very much regret that Johann is so blind and does not see the happiness that awaits him in the immediate vicinity.
A picnic that Prince Ludwig has prepared for Aurora goes completely wrong, as the princess shows her true colors and reveals how moody and capricious she is. Ludwig slowly realizes that neither life in high society nor Aurora corresponds to his ideas about life and love. He also notices that Lisbeth comes to mind more and more often. It just happened that Lisbeth overheard a conversation between the fairies and found out that Prince Ludwig and Johann are one and the same person.
The princes Amadeus and Laszlo have now made inquiries, which have shown that nothing of what the prince who they do not trust is true and that he is a con man. Shortly before one can seize him, Johann comes back into possession of the galoshes of luck, so to speak, at the last moment and disappears before the eyes of the nobles, never to be seen again.
Lisbeth has since hired the actors who appeared on the princess's birthday. Johann follows her and confesses to Lisbeth that he was stupid and blind and that he was probably blinded by false luck and asks Lisbeth to forgive him. They both seal their love with a kiss.

The shooting took place from June 19 to July 12, 2018. The film was shot in Schloss Stülpe and in the Babelsberg studio . The production company was Neue Schönhauser Filmproduktion GmbH.
The fairy tale film was presented for the first time on November 10, 2018 at the Cottbus Film Festival , before it premiered on December 26, 2018 in the ARD Das Erste program .
Comparison between fairy tales and fairy tale film
The story was first published in 1839 by the Danish fairy tale poet Andersen in his homeland and tells of magical overshoes that can bring those who have them to any place and any time he wants. The original fairy tale obviously seemed too "incomprehensible", "thinking" and "serious" to adapt it for their series. The original story takes place in Copenhagen. There are the two fairies happiness and sorrow and also the galoshes, which, as soon as you put them on, grant wishes. In six chapters the adventures of a judicial councilor, a night watchman, a volunteer, a copyist and a theology student are told and what they experience with the galoshes. The message is that there are limits to what you want, which is typical of art fairy tales. This deeper meaning is also reflected in this film adaptation, although one has preferred to fall back on the well-known ingredients of a fairy tale film - a castle, a princess and a love story. This also means that the filmmakers have said goodbye to the original plot structure and almost all characters in the original fairy tale, which is probably also due to the length of the format.
In the film adaptation, the viewer is not taken to Copenhagen during the Biedermeier period, but to the Brandenburg provinces of the 18th century. In this film adaptation, the fairies, who only act at the beginning and the end of Andersen, pull the strings of fate much more actively as cooks Mrs. Glück and Mrs. Sorge.

criticism
On the page fairy tales in the film it is said that “the dramaturgical realignment of the ARD fairy tale films” is “sometimes accompanied by a flattening of the story, as mentioned: castle, princess, love story”. That is often not enough. It was criticized that this ARD fairy tale film “leans a little too much on another genre: the costume film”. Of course, clothes, hairstyles and make-up can be used to “describe perfectly” figures and their properties. The “pale complexion and the white powdered wigs of the affected aristocracy contrast with the healthy complexion and natural hair of the sympathetic servants”. The "fast-paced actions" that the director sends Prince Ludwig to would be "a little too exaggerated" and should primarily "appeal to younger viewers". The older ones, however, could be happy about "ambiguous coincidences". One of the most amusing scenes in the film is when two showmen staged the play The Tartuffe or The Deceiver of Molière on the occasion of Princess Aurora's birthday in the castle , which tells of a hypocrite who pretends to be something he is not.
In the online portal Filmdienst it was pointed out that almost only “the title” had been taken over from the “melancholy Andersen template” and that “instead, a happy romantic comedy” was intended. Occasionally, however, the film confuses "hectic rush and slapstick with real joke".
Also Tilmann P. Gangloff , a criticism for tittelbach.tv created, pointed out that the film with the same name Andersen fairy tale "more or less only the title public or" had. The "gloomy story of the Dane" is said to be "a joyful pastime when edited by the experienced duo of authors Anja Kömmerling and Thomas Brinx". The film is “worth seeing” “mainly because of Annette Frier and Inka Friedrich as opposing fairy couple: one as a suspect, the other as personified confidence”. Even the “little known young actors” would “convince”. "Andersen admirers", however, would "turn away with horror" because they had "made a romantic comedy out of the material". If you leave “Andersen” aside, the film is “a happy pastime for the whole family”. The film received four stars out of six.
