occupation

Jorinde und Joringel is a German fairy tale film by Bodo Fürneisen from 2011. The film is another adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale of the same name . Llewellyn Reichman can be seen as Jorinde and Jonas Nay as Joringel. Katja Flint plays the disappointed sorceress, Uwe Kockisch the knight who made her heart harden.

The film was first broadcast on December 25, 2011 by RBB as part of the ARD series " Six at a stroke ". Before that, there was a fundamentally differently arranged film adaptation of the fairy tale from 1986 .

action

Jorinde and Joringel are in love with each other and want to get married. The problem: Joringel works as a farmhand in Jorinde's father's farm. He doesn't think much of Joringel and is of the opinion that the boy is just nonsense in his head and that his daughter deserves a "better" man. Joringel, on the other hand, inspires his surroundings - especially Jorinde - with all sorts of magic tricks and other skills, such as juggling . When the village is haunted by a robber baron and his two cronies, Joringel and the knight face a confrontation. Joringel manages to use a trick to steal his booty (the income from Jorinde's father) from the robber baron. After the knight has left the village, believing that he will have rich booty, Jorinde falls on her “hero” with enthusiasm and they kiss each other stormily in front of the entire family. There is a violent argument with Jorinde's father; whereupon the lovers flee to the nearby magic forest. There they meet a powerful sorceress who can transform into an owl if necessary . She was disappointed in her great love in her youth and now sees it as her life's task to spare other young girls this painful experience. Convinced that Joringel will also disappoint Jorinde shortly, she stuns the young man and kidnaps Jorinde to her castle, where she transforms the girl into a nightingale . There are already other enchanted girls living in the castle who have sworn off love and pass the day working on their own bird cages, in which the sorceress locks them up if necessary.

Joringel sets out to free his lover. He comes close to the castle but cannot enter it because it is protected by a powerful force field. So he moves on and meets the robber baron again, who has now figured out Joringel's trick. However, he does not feel any thoughts of revenge, but is taken with the boy. He tries to get him to his side by showing him his riches. It was also the robber baron who broke the sorceress's heart at the time and since then has only strived for power and money. He has a magic flower from her, which he uses in critical situations to gain an advantage. However, the use of the flower has to be paid dearly by the owner: every time the flower is used, it consumes part of its life. Joringel sneaks the knight's trust and steals the flower. Pursued by the robber baron and his two cronies, he meets a pretty juggler daughter in a wooded area . For a moment, Joringel considers wandering the country with her instead of looking for Jorinde any further.

The sorceress has meanwhile flown with Jorinde to the forest, from where they are looking at the scene. She sees herself confirmed in the fact that Joringel will soon forget Jorinde. To show Joringel this, she lets a thunderstorm break in, which prevents the young man from leaving. But after a night in the tent of the juggler daughter, Joringel decides in favor of Jorinde and with the help of the magic flower gets through the force field into the interior of the castle. But this effort costs him so much life that he can only reach the courtyard as an old man. There he meets the sorceress and looks in amazement at a large number of bird cages. With the help of an owl feather from the sorceress, which Jorinde has been carrying with her since she was abducted, he can identify the real nightingale and thus free Jorinde. At first she does not recognize that the old man is her lover, but goes back to the village with him. There, under an old tree, where they once swore their love, Jorinde recognizes who is really standing in front of her. She takes hold of the magic flower and Joringel turns back into a young man. She herself does not change in the process. At the same time, as if by magic, all the bird cages in the courtyard of the palace open; the birds fly away and transform themselves back into young women who flock to the village. The sorceress, who previously turned the knight to stone, also flies into the village as an owl. The moment she lands on the knight's arm, she too turns into stone. Joringel and Jorinde are happily reunited.

Thematic bracket

The film begins with a shot of a large tree. There is an old man who thoughtfully touches a heart carved into the tree with the initials "Jo + Jo". The camera pans into the treetop to show the ground area again shortly afterwards. Now the actual film begins with Jorinde and Joringel as young people. Shortly before the end of the film, Joringel, as an old man, and Jorinde meet again at the same tree. A magical rejuvenation of Joringel finally forms the happy ending of the fairy tale. The film thus forms a strong contrast to the 1986 film adaptation, which was not in the beginning comedy, but was staged as a thoughtful anti-war film, and morally the sorceress had a completely different role.

criticism

The Lexicon of International Films rated the film positively, which read as follows: “An attractive (television) love story based on the fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm, which, full of melancholy, conjures up the opportunities and limits of loyalty and trust and in doing so turns itself into a beautiful anthem the power of love condenses. "

Tilmann P. Gangloff judged the film for tittelbach.tv and said that the story of the lovers is told “as a successful combination of romance and comedy”. He went on: “Jonas Nay embodies Joringel as a smart Luftikus who appears to be joining the robber knight, but repeatedly cheating on him and his dumb henchmen. Director Bodo Fürneisen leads the young actors to a safe performance. Katja Flint provides the sorceress with just enough black ribbon that one can feel sorry for her as a tragic figure; even if she leaves no stone unturned so that Jorinde knocks her lover out of her head.
