Frau Holle is a German fairy tale film by Bodo Fürneisen from 2008. It is based on the fairy tale Frau Holle and was created as part of the fairy tale film series " Six in one stroke ", which Erste Deutsche Fernsehen first broadcast in the 2008 Christmas program. Marianne Sägebrecht plays the title role , Herbert Feuerstein can be seen as Timor and narrator, Johanna Gastdorf as the mother of the sisters Marie and Luise, played by Lea Eisleb and Camille Dombrowsky .

A widow has two daughters who could hardly be more different. Marie, the older of the two, is participating with diligence in the daily work in the household, while Luise on the rotten lies skin. In contrast to Marie, who helps everyone, Luise is selfish, lazy and jealous. She also has something against Marie taking care of Struppi, the family dog, so devotedly. Whenever there is work to be done, Luise remembers that she does not feel well and has to lie down, so that all work is left to Marie. She even wants to steal a brooch from her sister, which is then given to her by the good-natured girl. Luise is always protected by her mother, while Marie has to take over all the work. When a dance party is coming up and only Marie cannot take part because she still has to spin wool , she stabs herself on the spindle , which then falls into the fountain when she tries to clean it. When Marie tries to fish her out, she falls into the well and wakes up in a flower meadow in a magical land. A raven named Gustav appears and tells her that she is in Frau Holle's land. When she asked who it was, he replied that Frau Holle was everything, summer, winter, spring and autumn. Marie wanders through the beautiful country of Frau Holle, where she is soon asked for help by a small caterpillar. As the girl moves on, someone shouts: “Pull us out, pull us out, otherwise we'll burn!” And of course Marie helps and frees the bread from the hot oven. Even when the apple tree calls out: "Oh shake me and shake me, my apples are all ripe!" Marie dutifully rushes to help. Suddenly, Pimpinella, the little caterpillar that has now turned into a beautiful butterfly, is sitting on Marie's arm and then the girl is already standing in front of Frau Holle's house. Marie is greeted warmly by her with the remark that she has already been waiting for her. The table is set with all kinds of delicacies. Marie can have that every day, says Frau Holle, all she has to do is keep the house clean, water the flowers and shake out the beds every now and then - that's all.
In the village they are now feverishly looking for the child after Struppi had barked wildly to draw attention to Marie's disappearance and now does not leave the well. Now Luise has to give her mother a hand, which the spoiled girl doesn't like at all. “If only Marie came back,” she grumbles. The mother also realizes that Marie is missing everywhere.
Marie has since received a beautiful dress from Mrs. Holle and has been looked after with a very special task. Since it was winter, she should shake out the beds as hard as possible so that a thick blanket of snow could form on the earth. Marie tries tirelessly to do this responsible job. Especially to the delight of the children, it then snows heavily on the ground. After some time has passed, Mrs. Holle thanks Marie and says that it is now time for spring to come. The wise woman has already noticed that Marie is longing for her mother and sister as well as for Struppi and her friends in her small village, and shows her the way home. This leads Marie through an archway, under which she receives her fair reward for her kindness and hard work. As she walks through it, gold rains down on her.
Back in her village the rooster crows: “Kikeriki, kikeriki, our golden maiden is here again.” Everyone in the village looks in amazement at the girl dressed in gold. She also brought back the spindle that Marie had fallen into the well; it is now made of pure gold. Marie's mother is happy about the daughter's return, as is Struppi. Luise wants to know exactly from her sister what she has experienced. Shortly afterwards, when Marie's return was celebrated in the village, nobody looked for Luise. The girl then decides to try her luck with this ominous Frau Holle and jumps into the well after she deliberately injured herself on the spindle. And indeed, she wakes up in the same place as Marie, but her perception is completely different. She reacts to the little caterpillar with disgust and speaks condescendingly to the raven Gustav. She just wants to know how to get to Frau Holle. When the bread calls out to pull it out, she says she's not stupid and burned her fingers. She only pulls one out of the oven because she is hungry. She offers the raven the brooch that she still has from Marie as a reward if he shows her the way to Frau Holle. From the apple tree that asks for help, she just grabs an apple to eat. “It all comes back, the good and the bad,” the apple tree calls after her. When Luise reaches Frau Holle's house, she is kindly invited in by the latter. She only does the work assigned to her reluctantly and with a grudge, and is usually stubborn. When winter is approaching and one hopes for snow on earth, Luise quickly finds this work too much and she falls asleep on the pillow that she should shake vigorously. Gustav thinks that this is a lost labor of love with Luise and Frau Holle should finally give her the wages she deserves and send her home. When Ms. Holle explains to Luise that she no longer needs her help, the girl just snippets: “Well, finally” and wants to know where to go to the archway. But instead of the golden rain she had hoped for, Luise received her wages in the form of a rain of bad luck clinging to her . When she comes back to the village, the rooster crows: “Kikeriki, kikeriki, our unlucky marie is here again” and the villagers laugh at Luise. Luise looks bad and when Marie gives her her golden dress as a consolation, the gold dissolves. Even Frieder, who used to woo Luise, no longer wants to know anything about her. Sadly, the girl withdraws and hears Mrs. Holle's voice: “The good, the bad, the bad luck and the luck, it all comes back. Every day can be a new beginning, it is entirely up to you. ”Luise thinks about it and from now on shows friendliness and helpfulness and with every good deed she loses a bit of bad luck until nothing is left of it, and also the dress shimmers golden again. But Luise never again forgot how good it is to be kind to others and to help them.

The film was shot in September and October 2007 in the Spreewalddorf Lehde , especially in the Spreewaldmuseum Lehde in Brandenburg and in the Havelstudios Berlin .

The dream world in "Frau-Holle-Land" was created with the help of digital trick technology in the blue screen process .
For a long time, Frau Holle was the only film in the series that had been produced for the annual season a year earlier. That changed with Das Märchen vom Schlaraffenland and Hans im Glück for the 2016 season.
Comparison with the fairy tale
In the implementation of the fairy tale, some characters were invented in order to give the story humorous traits: In the original, neither a baker nor a landlady are represented, nor does the speaking raven exist. In addition, Marie and Luise in the film are real sisters and not stepsisters. In contrast to the original, there is a happy ending for Luise , as she does not remain permanently disfigured by bad luck .

“The (television) remake of Grimm's fairy tale evokes the cardinal virtue of diligence and punishes laziness similar to the traditional version. Otherwise, she relies on an unsuccessful mixture of Wizard of Oz and modern trick fantasy, which seems more cheesy than amusing. "
