Pan Yuliang

Pan Yuliang (born June 14, 1895 in Anhui , Empire of China , † July 22, 1977 in Paris , France ) was a Chinese painter , graphic artist and sculptor . She was born as Zhang Yuliang.

Life

Pan Yuliang lost her parents at the age of 14 and was raised by her uncle. He sold her to a brothel when she was young . There she was put on a tax and customs officer (Pan Zanhua) to corrupt him . He immediately bought her from the brothel and took Pan Yuliang as his second wife. She began to paint and trained under the painter Liu Haisu at the Shanghai Art Academy . There she won a competition and received a scholarship to study in Paris. She tried to build on the expressionists of that time with her painting style . She lived in very poor conditions and had some artistic success, which she did not realize commercially. To study the Italian masters, she lived in Rome for a few years and then returned to Shanghai. Her pictures, including nude models (mostly self-portraits), caused a lot of controversy in China (Shanghai), also due to her origins as prostitutes, which resulted in one of her exhibitions in Shanghai being devastated and many pictures of her first creative period destroyed. After this incident, shortly before the Japanese entered the war in Shanghai, she accepted an invitation from well-known gallery owners to Paris.

Due to the political turmoil of the Second World War and the subsequent Chinese civil war between republicans around Chiang Kai-shek and communists around Mao Zedong , she never returned to China, but retained her Chinese citizenship. Pan Yuliang died in poverty in Paris in 1977 at the age of 82 and was buried there on the Cimetière Montparnasse .

Her story was in a biography novel writer Jennifer Cody Epstein The painter from Shanghai (German: The Iron Orchid ) described and in a film in 1995 with the title: Hua Hun (A Soul Haunted by Painting) under the camera of Lü Yue filmed . Her pictures are scattered around the world, most of them can be found in exhibitions in her home province.
