Panagiotis stamatakis

Panagiotis Stamatakis ( Greek Παναγιώτης Σταµατάκης , * around 1840 in Varvitsa , Greece ; † March 19, 1885 in Athens ) was a Greek classical archaeologist .

Life

Nothing is known about his youth and education. In January 1866 Panagiotis Stamatakis became assistant to the Generalephor of the Antiquities of Greece and was sworn in as a civil servant on July 15, 1866. In 1871 he became a traveling ephor , with a changing field of activity. On March 3, 1875 he was promoted to the Ephoros of the Antiquities of the Argolida and supervised the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in Mycenae . He was critical of the work of the German archaeologist and accused him of sacrificing classical antiquities in search of Homeric relics. In the following year he continued the Schliemann excavations in Mycenae.

He carried out excavations in Attica ( Mycenaean tomb in Spata, Propylaea on the Acropolis ), Boeotia (1879-80 in Chaironeia , Thespiai ), Fthiotida , Delphi , on the Peloponnese ( Tholos tomb of Prosymna near Heraion of Argos ) and on Delos by. In 1875 he founded the Archaeological Museum in Sparta . He also founded museums in Chaironeia and Tanagra .

On September 7, 1884 he was appointed Ephorus General of the Antiquities of Greece. He died on March 19, 1885 as a result of chronic malaria , which he probably contracted during the excavation in Chaironeia. He was buried in the First Athens Cemetery. Wilhelm Dörpfeld designed the grave stele on his grave . The grave was cleared and no longer exists today.
