Panagjurishte [ pɐnɐˈɡjuriʃtɛ ] (English transcription Panagyurishte , international transliteration Panagjurište , Bulgarian Панагюрище ) is a Bulgarian city on the upper reaches of the Maritsa . It is located 43 kilometers north of Pazardzhik in the Sredna Gora Mountains. At the same time, it is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name.

The Thracian gold treasure of Panagyurishte was found near Panagyurishte in 1949 and has been kept in the Archaeological Museum in Plovdiv since the 1970s .

history

Favored by the location, the nature and the climate, people settled in the region even before the Middle Ages . Among other things, they built the Krasen and Dushkovchenin fortresses, the ruins of which have been preserved. The foundation of the city Panagyurishte - named after the Greek πανηγυρι - took place in the time of the Ottoman conquests in the Balkans. In the 16th century it was mainly Albanians who immigrated to the region. The old Turkish name (until 1885) was Otluk-Köy ( Otluk Köyü ).

Panagyurishte was one of the centers of the April uprising against Ottoman rule in May 1876. Although unsuccessful and brutally suppressed, the uprising played an important role in the Bulgarian national movement . The city was burned down, but rebuilt from 1878. However, historical buildings have hardly been preserved.

In 1949, three brothers who ran a brick factory found a pot of gold in the vicinity of the town while looking for clay . Archaeologists have the find to the 4th to 3rd century BC. Dated. As a result, a history museum was established in the village, in which copies of the treasure are shown; the originals were brought to Plovdiv.

In 1977 Panagyurishte was designated a community center.

From 1983 until the fall of the Wall in the GDR there was a town partnership with the German town of Aue in Saxony , where Bockauer Straße had been renamed Panagjurischter Straße by the town administration . After 1990, however, it got its old name back, and the town twinning was not continued.

The city has given its name to the Panagyurishte Nunatak on Greenwich Island in Antarctica since 2005 .
