Pankraz Winiker

Pankraz Winiker OSB (born December 16, 1925 in Beromünster ; † October 25, 2013 in Disentis ; entitled to live in Triengen ; birth name Josef Winiker ) was a Swiss Benedictine priest and abbot of the Disentis monastery .

Life

Winiker studied for his graduation in Disentis Catholic Theology at the Lucerne seminary, and later joined the novitiate of the Congregation of Benedictine in Disentis Abbey . On September 29, 1947 he made his profession and took the religious name Pankratius . On May 12, 1951, he was ordained a priest by Christian Caminada , Bishop of Chur. He taught mathematics and geography at the boarding school of the Disentis monastery; He also taught the violin and was choirmaster and music director from 1970 to 1999, as well as choral magister of the monastery. He was elected a subprior of the abbey in 1972 and took over the office of novice master in 1985.

On April 15, 1988 he was elected 64th abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Disentis and headed the monastery until 2000. The abbot's benediction was given to him on June 11, 1988 by the Chur bishop Johannes Vonderach . His motto was "Pax et gaudium" (Peace and Joy). From 1991 to 1997 he was the first Benedictine abbot of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation .

After his retirement, he lived in the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem from 2001 to 2002 and was involved in the training of novices.

He campaigned for a liturgical renewal of the Disentis Abbey, including the German choir prayer.
