Benno Malfèr

Benno Malfer OSB ( Christian name Christian * 20th December 1946 in Bolzano-Gries , Tyrol , † 28. August 2017 in Bolzano ) was an Italian Benedictine monk . Since 1991 he was abbot of the Muri-Gries Abbey near Bozen.

Life

Malfèr grew up in Gries and attended the Franciscan high school in Bolzano , where he obtained his Matura in 1965. In 1966 he made his profession in the Benedictine monastery of Muri-Gries and was ordained priest in 1971 . From 1975 he was a cooperator in the parish St. Augustin / Gries. He completed his theology studies in Munich and Rome. In 1978 he received his doctorate at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo with a dissertation on theological ethics . From 1981 to 1991 he held a professorship for moral and pastoral theology at the same university , and has been teaching since then. He played a key role in the development of the marriage and parenting advice service in South Tyrol and was a founding member and vice-president of the association of the same name.

In 1991 he was elected Abbot of Muri and Prior of Gries to succeed Dominikus Löpfe . In addition, from 1997 to 2015 he was abbot praeses of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation , to which the Muri-Gries Abbey belongs. From 2003 to 2012 he chaired the Salzburg Abbots' Conference , after which he served as chairman of the South Tyrolean Superior Conference until his death.

I.a. As abbot, he promoted the nativity scene in South Tyrol, maintained a close relationship with the headquarters of the monastery in Muri, renovated the monastery church in Gries and tried to digitize the library catalogs of the monasteries. He was the holder of the medal of honor of the state of Tyrol .
