Dominikus Löpfe

Dominic III Löpfe OSB (born January 21, 1916 in Mörschwil ; † December 7, 1996 ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1962 to 1991 he was abbot of the Muri-Gries Abbey in Bozen ( South Tyrol ).

The son of the innkeeper Karl Anton Löpfe and Maria Edelmann attended the Benedictine-run grammar school in Sarnen from 1931 to 1938 . He then studied theology at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Milan in Venegono Inferiore and at the University of Freiburg i.Üe. In 1943 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the doctrine of virtue of St. Ambrose . After Löpfe had made his profession in 1941 , he was ordained a priest three years later . In Sarnen he worked as a teacher at the grammar school from 1944, and from 1953 also as a librarian. His election as Abbot of Muri and Prior in Gries took place on September 26, 1962. During Löpfe's term of office, the construction of the collegiate church St. Martin in Sarnen as well as the secularization of the grammar school and its conversion into the canton school Obwalden at the same place took place. From 1963 to 1967 he also served as President of the Association of Superiors of the Order of Switzerland.
