Special forms

Pannus ( Latin lobes ; abbreviation: pan ) are shredded cloud parts that sometimes form a coherent layer and lie below another cloud with which they can sometimes be connected. This accompanying cloud mostly occurs with Altostratus , Nimbostratus , Cumulus and Cumulonimbus .

Nimbostratus pannus is a concomitant of Nimbostratus . It arises when rain evaporates and condenses and announces rain soon. It can also be observed during prolonged rain, so-called land rain , when a warm front passes through .
