Paolo Barelli (born June 7, 1954 in Rome ) is an Italian politician , sports official and former swimming athlete . He is also President of the Italian Swimming Federation Federazione Italiana Nuoto (FIN) and the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN).

Time as a swimmer

The 1.84 m tall Bartoli participated as a member of the Italian Olympic team in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and 1976 in Montreal as a butterfly and freestyle swimmer . His best result in Montreal was a seventh place in the 4 × 100 meter relay. In Munich, when he was eighteen, he was part of the Italian 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay.

When he took part in the swimming world championships after 1973 in Belgrade in 1975 in Cali, Colombia, he won a bronze medal (Italy 3: 31.85 min.) In the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay behind the German silver medal relay with Klaus Steinbach and Peter Nocke . At the 1974 European Swimming Championships in Vienna, he had three relay places in the top six.

The 1975 Mediterranean Games in Algiers yielded three medals, including a gold one again in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay and the second gold one in the individual 100 meter dolphin competition.

Political activity

Bartoli belongs to the Berlusconi party Forza Italia and sat for three legislative periods from 2001 to 2013 in the Senato della Repubblica , from 2008 for the temporary party alliance Il Popolo della Libertà .

Swimming official

Based on an activity for the top Roman swimming club Aurelia Nuoto Unicusano , engagements at national and international level followed. Barelli was elected President of the Luxembourg- based Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN) on September 29, 2012. He had already reached the top of the Federazione Italiana Nuoto in 2000. Barelli is also Honorary Secretary of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA).
