Paolo Lunardon

Paolo Lunardon OSB (* as Pietro Lunardon on May 25, 1930 in Cuasso al Monte , Province of Varese , Lombardy ; † October 11, 2017 in Pontida , Province of Bergamo , Lombardy) was an Italian religious and territorial abbot of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome .

Life

Pietro Lunardon joined the community of the Benedictine Abbey of San Giacomo di Pontida in 1944 and received the religious name Paolo . After his novitiate in the Abbey of Cava de 'Tirreni near Salerno, he made his profession on November 4, 1952 . On July 8, 1956, he was ordained a priest in Montecassino Abbey .

Lunardon studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo , the religious college of the Benedictine order in Rome. At the Roman Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies (“Scuola Vaticana”) he graduated in library studies and palaeography and in Milan in archival studies . In 1971, Father Paolo graduated from the Catholic University of Milan with a degree in history and philosophy . Lunardon has served as a teacher and principal in public schools.

In the Abbey of Montecassino he was, among other things, archivist, novice master and claustral prior. From 1980 to 1986 he was a visitor to the Cassinese Congregation . He was prior of the monastery of San Pietro d'Assisi and pastor of the associated parish. Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the Territorial Abbey of Cava de 'Tirreni on November 16, 1992 .

On July 25, 1997, Paolo Lunardon was appointed Abbot of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome by John Paul II . Shortly before his death, on April 1, 2005, John Paul II accepted the abbot's age-related resignation. Lunardon was the last abbot ordinary of the Territorial Abbey of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome .

Paolo Lunardon died in his professed monastery of San Giacomo in Pontida.
