He then studied electronics at the University of Florence . He completed this in 1992 and received the degree of a graduate engineer . From 1992 to 1993 he was a self-employed development engineer in the field of electrical and hydraulic systems. In 1994 he joined the "X Cycle" doctoral program in Systems Engineering at the University of Bologna . He worked as a research assistant within this project at the Universities of Siena (Italy) and Santa Barbara ( California , USA ). He worked in Santa Barbara for a year under the direction of Prof. Brad Paden on the subject of " Advanced Geometric Control Techniques for Mechanical Systems ", on which he also received his doctorate in 1998 at the University of Bologna. In 1998 Paolo Mercorelli received a research grant from the European Commission as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Measures Program. This supports European doctoral students and postdocs who want to do research outside their home country. It is also one of the most coveted and renowned awards in the EU for interdisciplinary research and international collaboration.

Within this program he worked from 1998 to 2001 as a research assistant at ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) in Heidelberg and then until 2005 as head of the control technology group at the IAI (Institute for Automation and Computer Science) in Wernigerode . In 2005 he was appointed professor for process informatics at the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences in Wolfsburg , where he carried out various projects with the research center of Volkswagen AG . In 2009 he received a professorship for mechatronics from the German University in  Cairo , which he turned down in order to stay in Germany.
