Papiervoss was the short name of a paper goods manufacturer and wholesaler founded in Hanover in the 19th century . He was an international market leader with his exercise books for schoolchildren .

history

The company founder Louis Voss (1830–1905)

Louis Voss (1830–1905), born during the industrialization of the Kingdom of Hanover , was a son of the salt merchant Franz Edmund Voss (born March 31, 1792 in Kniestedt ; † March 18, 1867 in Groß Mahner ) and Johanne Sophie Strube (* 21. October 1799 in Groß Mahner; † November 11, 1887 in Groß Mahner). After the annexation of the Kingdom of Prussia Louis Voss opened in the former residence of Hanover, now capital of the Prussian province of Hanover , 1867 in the Castle Road 9 before Ballhof a paper shop under his own name Louis Voss . By producing high-quality as well as inexpensive school exercise books, “Voss” or “the writing book king” achieved a certain fame in the city.

In the early days of the German Empire , Louis Voss' son Ludwig Voss (born March 24, 1871) entered his father's business in 1895 and expanded the company by expanding the production of exercise books, for which a small business building was initially built on a plot of land purchased on Volgersweg . From this wholesale location, the products were only given to resellers or shipped, while the father continued to run the shop in Hanover's old town until his death, which was only given up in 1905.

After the company on Volgersweg had grown into a large operation after just a few years, Ludwig Voss acquired the hinterland of a piece of land across the street and built another new building at Volgersweg 37 for "Department B", the paper goods factory. In addition, as early as 1900, the company owned another property, a storage facility with a fenced-in property at the Südbahnhof with its own siding at the - then - address Bischofsholer Damm 10-15 .

Already in 1904, the place had become again too cramped at both locations in Volgersweg, the company said that now a large contiguous and traffic-convenient plot complex with the individual land Celler Straße 142 and 143 and Kohlrausch Straße 1 bis 4 acquired to to erect an imposing new building there. Even in the imperial era, the " Atelier für Hochperspektiven" operated by P. Breidert in Hanover created a lively and certainly embellished view of the four-story, elongated factory with apartments, in which, in addition to various horse-drawn carriages as a means of transport, the tram from that time and a first automobile can be seen is.

After the First World War at the latest, Papiervoss- H.-G. Developed into the leading supplier of exercise books in the Weimar Republic and abroad. Nevertheless, the main activity of the company was in the paper wholesale trade, the further expansion of which led to a division of the company:

  1. A wholesaler for wrapping paper , which as a joint stock company "following the paper mill Osthofen under the company " United Paper Mills Ebert Voss A.-G. was built and also manufactured bags and toilet paper , and
  2. a so-called fine paper department run by the company Voss-Papier-Handelsgesellschaft as a wholesaler of papers for printing companies, paper processing plants and paper shops. "Mr. Feldmann", who had previously worked for many years as an authorized signatory at Papiervoss, joined this company as director in 1925 .

In the middle of the war year 1942, Papiervoss celebrated its 75th anniversary on July 4th. A year later, in October 1943, the company buildings were badly hit by air raids. The company chronicle describes that the factory building and parts of the storage building burned out. After emergency repairs, parts of the cellar, the attic and the courtyard were already usable a month later, so that production could be resumed. After the end of the Second World War, the old business premises were rebuilt. Papiervoss continued its business operations until the end of 1973, but only to a limited extent from 1972 due to changes in the market economy and the age of the company boss Werner Voss. In 1973/74 operations were completely stopped and the company Papiervoss was deleted from the Hanover commercial register.
