Parbati in the Baran District

The Parbati (also Parwati or Parvati ) is an approx. 436 km long right tributary of the Chambal in the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan . It drains an area of approx. 15,850 km², of which approx. 5000 km² are in Rajasthan.

course

The Parbati has its origin on the northern slopes of the Vindhya Mountains . It rises at an altitude of 609  m about 30 km south-southwest of the city of Ashta in the Sehore district in Madhya Pradesh. From there it flows mostly in a northerly direction and passes the city of Ashta. After a good 220 km it reaches the border with Rajasthan and forms its border with Madhya Pradesh over a length of about 50 km; then he turns to the northwest. The next 83 km of the river are within the Baran district of Rajasthan. For the last 58 km or so it takes a northerly direction and again forms the political border between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Finally the Parbati flows into the Chambal.

Tributaries

Important tributaries of the Parbati are: Papnaus Ajnal, Sewan Paru, Utawali, Paraparwa, Mawal, Tem, Bhader, Gochi, Gaumukh, Sunk, Negri, Chopan, Uproni, Duhral, Andheri, Beram, Kosam, Ahelil and Sukni.

Places on the river

Because of the predominantly flat shore zones and the therefore constantly rising flood level in the summer monsoon season, there are no larger cities on the banks of the Parbati, apart from the higher Ashta. The small town of Atru in Rajasthan, about 4 km west of the river bank, should also be mentioned .

use

The river is mainly used for field irrigation. The riparian zones offer shelter and breeding grounds for many birds and other small animals.
