The Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime is an Italian nature park . It is located in Piedmont in the Italian Maritime Alps and is divided into three large valleys ( Valle Gesso , Valle Stura and Valle Vermenagna ) and five municipalities ( Aisone , Entracque , Valdieri , Roaschia and Vernante ). The highest mountain is Monte Argentera at 3,297 m.

History of origin

The origins of the nature park go back to the hunting ground Valdieri-Entraque of King Vittorio Emanuele II in 1857. The establishment and management of natural parks in Italy was regulated by Decree ( Decreto del Presidente della Repubblica ) 616/77 and made the responsibility of the individual regions . Founded in 1980 as Parco naturale dell'Argentera , the current name of the nature park was introduced in 1995 after it was merged with the Riserva del Bosco e dei Laghi di Palanfré . There is a close cooperation with the French Mercantour National Park , which has also been contractually fixed since 1987. Both park administrations are working together to create a “European national park”.

Flora and fauna

The nature park has a diverse flora (over 2000 plant species, 40 of which are endemic ). The best known of the endemic plants is the florulenta Saxifraga , a rare Steinbrechart flowers, after about 30 years, only once and then dies.

Chamois , Alpine ibex , golden eagle , bearded vulture , marmot , European mouflon , capercaillie and some Italian wolves live in the nature park . The reintroduction of the ibex began back in 1921.

Nature and environmental protection

In 1993 the nature park was awarded the European Diploma for Protected Areas by the Council of Europe .
