The Valle Gesso is a valley in the Maritime Alps in the province of Cuneo in the Italian region of Piedmont . In the upper reaches it is part of the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime national park .
description
The alpine valley is surrounded by the highest mountains in the region, in particular Monte Argentera (3,297 m). The municipalities of Entracque , Roaschia , Valdieri and Roccavione belong to the valley . The neighboring valleys are the Valle Vermenagna , the Tinée Valley in France and the Valle Stura di Demonte . Above Valdieri, the Valle Gesso divides into the two valleys, Valle Gesso di Entracque and Valle Gesso della Valletta. The inhabitants of the valley belong to the Occitan language area .
history
Before the Roman conquest , the valley was inhabited by the Ligurians . After the fall of the Roman Empire, Benedictines founded the Pedona monastery around the year 600. They ruled the valley until King Ludwig I bequeathed it to the Asti diocese in 901 . In the 13th century, after a brief affiliation with the Margraviate of Saluzzo, it was acquired by the House of Anjou , who founded the administrative district of Piedmont with the capital Cuneo.
After the 14th century, the valley was a fiefdom of the Duchy of Savoy until the 19th century . With the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, the valley became Italian. During the Second World War , the valley was a retreat for Italian partisans and, for a short time, an escape route for Jews persecuted in France.
economy
Agriculture and animal husbandry are the traditional branches of the economy. Since there are larger limestone deposits, the Italcementi company built a cement works in Borgo San Dalmazzo . In 1982 the Entracque pumped storage power plant went into operation. With a bottleneck capacity of 1.32 GW for the entire power plant, it is one of the largest pumped storage power plants in Europe. Tourism is still original, but is becoming increasingly important.
