The river Vermenagna, which gives the valley its name, rises above the municipality of Limonetto at an altitude of around 2000 m and flows into the river Gesso after 27.1 km at an altitude of 610 m . The main peaks of the valley are Rocca dell'Abisso (2755 m), Cima della Fascia (2495 m) and Monte Bussaia (2451 m). Side valleys branch off in Vernante and Limone Piemonte . The inhabitants of the valley belong to the Occitan language area .
history
The valley has always been of military importance due to the traffic route to France via the Tenda Pass. After Roman times and various changes, the valley belonged to the diocese of Asti from the 11th century . In 1364 the valley passed to the House of Savoy . During their reign, and especially at the time of Napoleon , the road was expanded. At the end of the 19th century, the Forte Centrale fortress was built on the pass at an altitude of 1908 m . It should serve to defend the Italian side. However, it was never needed.
economy
Agriculture is a traditional industry. The road connection over the Tanda Pass has gained significantly in importance with the road tunnel completed in 1882. In 1928 the Tendabahn was inaugurated as a continuous rail link from Cuneo to Nice . Both promoted tourism, which is an important economic factor especially in the region around Limone Piemonte . The community is a well-known ski station that has an extensive range of slopes and lifts. The region is also popular with hikers, mountain bikers and other recreational athletes in summer. In the course of the 20th century, various industrial plants and mining operations were built in the valley (cement production, paper mills, chemicals), some of which are now closed again.
