Meeting point by the water

The Park of the Senses was created as part of the Expo project regional landscape space on Kronsberg on a former garbage dump in Laatzen near Hanover.

Hearing, sight, touch and smell can be tested on many permanently installed systems in Laatzen. Among other things, earpieces, a barefoot path , sound bars, a pendulum and a sundial are available .

location

Display board in the park of the senses

The approximately seven hectare park is laid out like a basin on the former garbage dump. Around the park, especially on the border with a busy road, there is a wall that is planted with wild roses and other trees.

The park itself is divided into several sub-spaces, which are varied with different paths, dry stone walls , different plants and stones.

Experience stations

The meeting point by the water is a pond framed by a roundabout . A path over steps in the water offers a particularly close view of what is happening in the pond. The bank is designed to be close to nature.

Barefoot path

The stony path is a barefoot path made of coarse pebbles, broken sandstone slabs, cobblestones, wooden planks and pavement, clinker brick, and other materials. The garden of scents is a place of many smells, especially in summer. The perennials and trees grow on a sunny south-west slope. Many of the plants are known as medicinal plants . The dry valley is a hollow that is covered with lime sandstone blocks. On hot summer days, the air shimmers with warmth, making energy visible. The hedge labyrinth is one of the adventure stations. Here, too, various colorful, blooming and smelling plants are arranged, this time in the form of a labyrinth with a distorting mirror in the middle .

The Echo-Hof contains a collection of noise-generating stations. Stones can be made to ring with a rubber mallet, and messages can be whispered over a relatively long distance via two opposing parabolic bowls. The place of idyll is a pond with rippling water, on the banks of which colorful flowers bloom. A stone wall was built around it. The outer path is covered by an overgrown pergola . The humming stone invites you to plunge your head into the carved cavity, which acts as a noise-amplifying echo room. Humming can cause vibrations throughout the body. The singing bowl makes it possible to make sound vibrations in water visible. The play forest is a steep, tree-covered hill on which roots and tree trunks lie. Children can climb these. This play forest is to be expanded.

At the source , water flows down a wall into a small stream . Children can dam this stream with stones and sand and splash around in it. Perennials and flowers stand on the flat slopes of the Valley of the Butterflies , so that butterflies , bees and bumblebees can be observed.

amphitheater

The meeting place is an elevation built like an amphitheater . 250 to 300 visitors can take a seat here on stone steps, and events are also held here. At the highest point there is a sculpture, a humming stone made of porous basalt . If you stick your head in this stone, you hear and feel a humming and humming. Steep cliffs made of yellow sandstone tower up in the gorge . The dripping water creates a cool, moist environment with appropriate plants. The play of colors again offers a large number of colorful blooming flowers near the meeting point by the water .

Biotopes

The Park of the Senses offers a place for many biotopes:

Art objects

Gate handle at the entrance

The handles of the entrance gates symbolize the senses see - smell - feel - taste. They were created in old blacksmithing by Andreas Rimkus . The insect eye by Andreas Rimkus is particularly popular with children , as it allows a gaze to be cast over the park and the city as if with a compound eye. The park's sundial does not have a shadow stick, so the visitor can determine the time with his own shadow.

The pendulum swings very easily and can be made to move for a long time. The motorcycle of Dorissa Lem symbolizes the life cycle of man and nature. Hardy Girod's split stone (Saxum Scissum) is a symbol of the world's oldest tool, the wedge .

Sabbath table (sculpture)

The Sabbath table is a sandstone sculpture. The utensils of a Sabbath table and the Christian Lord's Supper are carved on it. The chandelier originally on the table was destroyed by vandalism.

The garden house is the park's information center. The tours start here and small souvenirs can be purchased.

Planning and carrier

The park was planned and designed by the Hanoverian garden and landscape architect Hans-Joachim Adam. The city of Laatzen is responsible for this park. The park is also supported by the Park of the Senses Association. V.

In the future, the park is to be supplemented by further stations.

opening hours

The park is open daily during the day and entry is free. Guided tours take place at certain times and on request.
