Parkland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pierce County , Washington state . The population was 24,053 at the 2000 United States Census and grew to 35,803 people by the 2010 United States Census . As a community-free area , Parkland is a suburb of Tacoma and is the seat of Pacific Lutheran University .

Parkland is eight miles (12.8 km) south of Tacoma on the main route to nearby Mt. Rainier. It got its name from early white settlers , who actually reminded the huge Oregon oaks , the blue lily blossoms of the prairie and the many meandering streams of a park landscape. Midwestern Americans of Norwegian descent chose the site in 1890 as the home of their new college, now Pacific Lutheran University , the home of 3,500 full-time students and the Lutherans.

The population was 73.91% White , 8.07% African American , 1.04% Native American , 6.64% Asian , 1.81% Pacific Islander , 2.06% from other "races" and 6.47% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 5.33% of the population.

Of the 8,869 households, 32.6% had children under the age of 18, 45.8% were run by married couples living together and 14.1% by single mothers; 34.8% were non-families. 26.3% of households were singles and 7.4% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.05.

The median age in the city was 31 years. 25% of the population were under 18, 16.9% between 18 and 24, 28.3% between 25 and 44, 19.7% between 45 and 64 and 10.1 65 years or older. For every 100 women there were 94.2 men, for those over 18 years of age it was 90.8 men for 100 women.

Men had a median income of US $ 36,169 compared to US $ 27,036 for women. The per capita income was US $ 18,649.
