The Passage du Havre , named after the French city of Le Havre , is a covered shopping arcade with a glass roof from the mid-19th century in the 9th arrondissement in Paris .
location
Passage du Havre is located between 69 rue Caumartin and 109 rue Saint-Lazare, in a business district near the major department stores. Other passages are in the vicinity: Passage Jouffroy ( 9th arrondissement ), Passage Verdeau (9th arrondissement) and Passage Puteaux ( 8th arrondissement ).
Saint-Lazare and Havre - Caumartin are the closest metro stations to , and . The proximity to the Saint-Lazare suburban train station favored the construction of the passage.
Name origin
The name was given because of its proximity to the Rue du Havre . Street and passage refer to the town of the same name at the mouth of the Seine .
history
The passage was built in 1845 on land belonging to the nobles Fouquel, Selles, Doux and Durand-Billion. It was opened with "ordonnance de police" on September 7, 1846 under the name Passage du Chantier de Tivoli .
Today, the Passage du Havre is the busiest passage in Paris as it is located between the Saint-Lazare train station and the large Printemps and Galeries Lafayette department stores and is used as a link by both shoppers and employees working in the area. The complete renovation in the 1990s is like a new building that has not retained any of the old decor. The shops of well-known international retail groups are located on two floors, just like in a shopping center. The passage is an example of how a historical building structure, which had a significant impact on the history of Paris in the 19th century, was destroyed by real estate speculation and not being placed under protection as a monument in good time .
